I put some pictures in an album this morning. I hope to have something written later today, although it probably won't be much of a report. Good trip...just not much to report, other than the S Rim adventure.
  Enjoy!

Nothing wrong with that.  At least you didn't have to report "got a flat tire on the Pine Canyon road", then after changing that blew the tranny on the Old Ore road and had to have the vehicle towed to Alpine".

Great pics - like the tent.  RV name was neat.  So, no one was there to greet you at the entrance.   I wonder how much money they "lose" by people entering and never paying their entrance fees.  Nice two pic pano too.  How were the stars?

Thanks for the pictures Bill.  Glad you had a good time.  How was SW3?

SA Bill,
thanks for the pictures, it did look hazy while you were up on the rim.  SW3 site looks more protected than I had thought.  Can't wait to hear the details.

Actually, there was no one in the box but they had cones out to make you go to the entrance building. But...I got in free anyway!! It was some kind of promotion for "use your national parks" or something like that so there was no charge for the entry permit. Saved $20.00 right off the bat!

There was so much haze the first few days that I never even got the scope out of the car, which was okay since I was going to the S Rim anyway. After a weak front blew through the night I was on the rim, the stars were excellent and I had a couple of great nights with the scope before I headed home.  eusa_clap

SW3 was pretty good! Not right on the rim but a decent view from the site and a great view (Thanks tj!) from a place nearby. I was lucky and the wind wasn't bad the night I was there. You can tell that the wind gets hairy up there because both of the places where you can pitch a tent have wind breaks constructed to block some of the wind. Going up Laguna Meadows was good too since the climb isn't as steep as the other side. Still, it is 5 miles from the trail head to SW3 and it's uphill almost all of the way.

When is your next trip?

If I try a one night hike in the low lands, probably late February or early March...before spring break??? Otherwise, sometime in April when the Milky Way is up higher.

I thought that is a great shot of the Milky Way.  I wish I could see the Milky Way like that.
