This is one of my favorites, and certainly a place that looks very different today. Panther Junction, 1959. The visitor center & headquarters building would not be constructed until 1962. Up the hill a number of houses are visible. By 1959 the headquarters had moved to PJ along with a number of staff (at the time HQ was our present maintence building).

That's a very familiar view; kind of...jarring without the VC there.

Thanks Eric.  Everytime I go to BB I buy a couple of books.  Great reads.  it might be nice to have a special place on this site for books.  I know they are mentioned in several different threads.

Great pics.

Quote from: "Desert Rat"
In the 60's and even into the 70's as I recall, the road into the Basin had several water stops for the cars that would overheat or vapor lock on the climb.

I remember those from the late 70s. If I remember correctly, they were known as the Upper and Lower Water Barrels. I believe you can still see the pullouts, but of course the water barrels are long gone.

This is from my first trip to BIBE in August of ’69. I’m fairly sure that Mt. Huffman is in the background so I think that would make this the upper of the two water barrel pullouts about 2 miles up the road from the lower barrels. The sign on the left is simply “Trash” over an upright trash barrel. The over exposed sign on the right says “AVOID INJURY”. The second line (I think) says, “Leave engine running” and I can’t make out the rest of the instructions. Maybe there are archival pics that can be posted of the sign if anyone cares. You’ll note all the stains on the pavement, which would indicate it was used more than we would like to think. I wonder how much wildlife died after lapping up the anti freeze.  Fortunately most of the stains appear to be rust, hopefully the majority of the over heaters were running straight water. The car? Why my trusty junky ’61 Mercury Comet (never over heated) which may re-appear in another thread someday. The film? Since we’re talkin’ old stuff it was 126 Dynachrome made by 3M.

I can’t see any of the previous pics Eric posted in this thread, are they gone for good? Or do I have something set wrong on my computer? :?:
OH!, nevermind, I now see those were links (now broken) not uploads.

They might still be out on the NPS server somewhere, but I haven't had a chance to dig.  However, the Internet Archive currently has a copy in their database:

Is it possible that I am finally getting the hint that the posted photos on page three are the same as those posted by Eric on page 1? I saw the post indicated that there was a series of photos, so I thought erroneously that I would see a series of photos. Evidently, the first post was a series of one and there was another series of one posted later in the thread.

Is this what you are trying to (successfully) tell me?
