I'm about the same age and also no longer lean and mean.  I spent a night at SW3 in February ascending via Laguna Meadows.  Due to my inexperience, my pack was grossly overloaded, and I got a late start on the trail (10 AM) but made it to my campsite in plenty of time to enjoy a most spectacular sunset.  With all due respect to BDann, I found the hike up to be fairly strenuous but certainly worth the effort.  My suggestion for you, and for my next trip, would be to start at daybreak, take frequent breaks, and spend at least one night on the rim.  I'm preparing for a return trip in the fall and my pack may still be overweight, but there will be 20 pounds less of me.

Take your time...and an extra gallon. I'd also invest in a good trekking pole if you don't already have one. Gatorade is good for a change, like Richard said. They sell powdered versions in the store and you can put some in a ziploc baggie. the dehydrated food is ok, try a few before you go to see which ones you like, some aren't that great. Pastas are light and they offer the tuna and chicken in those lil packets now too, which are easier to pack. Beef jerky is yummy but salty too. Take lots of pics! :D
