Title: Best Western Del Rio
Post by: chisos_muse on August 23, 2010, 08:07:31 AM
If anyone is thinking of stopping here on the way to Big Bend.....DON'T

I had some free points from my previous job in the travel industry and thought I'd break up the drive with my sons. The first room had disgusting stains and cigarrette burns on the mattresses that my oldest son found as he pulled back on the blankets. The non smoking room I reserved had an ashtray in the room and smelled like a bar. The carpet was torn and basically it was all bad.

I went to the front desk and the girl was nice enough and apologetic and offered me another room which I checked out first. It seemed mildly updated with newer beds and other things, and was a n/s room. As I was moving my kids from the first room my other son spotted a huge cockroach crawling up the bed!

Didn't sleep much that night....

I'll confirm the place is a mess, filthy, lots of stains, mole in bathrooms, refused to stay there.

Bummer Muse!

I stayed 5 nights in a BW last week in Harlingen and it was fabulous. Guess it all depends on the proprieters and how well they take care of the property. Is there a place to report them to the state? Seems like they need to be visited by an inspector.

Quality will vary from one location to the next.  I've always had good luck with La Quinta until 2 months ago when I stayed at one for my son's wedding.  I complained to the desk and my room was changed 3 times during a 3 night stay.  After returning home I filled out an online survey they sent me and a few days later I got a sincere apology from the unit manager and coupons for 2 nights free at any LQ.

Yes, we had a bad experience there at that one in 2004.  I know...I know...a few years back but it looks like it has not changed.  It looked like the Best Western at one time, was very nice.  You can see where they had a nice kitchen / eating area where the continental breakfast is now served.

After that bad experience, we started staying at the Best Western Villa Real in Acuna, just across the river.  It was an easy drive - go across the bridge and turn left; it was about two blocks from the bridge atBravo # 643.  VERY NICE.   And, it was lower cost than the Best Western in Del Rio.  It had covered parking and the staff was helpful, friendly and attentive.  Unfortunately, it is no longer listed under Best Western when you search, so they must have sold it.  Very sad.  But, given the article on Ma Crosby's (posted earlier today), I guess that things may have changed for them as well.

Hotel is still there no longer paying franchise fees to BW.

At least your follow-up room didn't have a used syringe along with a pee'd on roll of toilet paper and a bed with an unexplained wet spot in the middle! It could have been worse! Not cool to have a roach in the room, but I'll possibly take a bug or two in the room (you gotta consider the area) over unexplained stains and debris and possibly excrement left by the previous patrons. :)

A stay at the Knights Inn nearest to Coors Field in Denver will yield this type of stay if things haven't changed since the last time I *almost* stayed there. Not only that, but the hotel staff refused to offer me a refund when they said that they couldn't put me up in a different room (hotel was somehow booked solid) when I told them what I found in there! :(

Thankfully the chain refunded me directly... And because I'd disputed the charge when the hotel wouldn't budge during the first three weeks of arguing, I actually got refunded two times. Whatever the case, I completely understand how bad you must've felt esp. trying to show your kiddos a good time. I was happy that my 'rents didn't get the room with the whiptail when we stayed in the basin... That might've made it so they wouldn't have wanted to ever go back to Big Bend! :)

Guys, for many (if not most) hotels you can get decent reviews at tripadvisor that can spare you the experience of places like the Best Western Del Rio. Just Google "hotel name" tripadvisor.

For example googling "best western del rio" tripadvisor

brings me to:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60717-d73624-Reviews-Best_Western_Inn_of_Del_Rio-Del_Rio_Texas.html (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60717-d73624-Reviews-Best_Western_Inn_of_Del_Rio-Del_Rio_Texas.html)

which has reviews that echo what's already been said here. Tripadvsior has saved me from many bad places!

I have used TripAdvisor several times but there were only 4 reviews and from a few years ago. The two French ones rated higher for whatever reason. I took a chance and it didn't work out well. I wouldn't have minded so much if my children weren't with me. It was their first night in Texas and I felt bad. The main reason I booked it was because of my free points and I'm not rich. If I had extra $ I would have gone down the road to a better place.

Despite that evening we had a fabulous time in Big Bend and the rest of their stay in TX.  :icon_biggrin:

Well....there aren't many. Long story that involves misplacing the camera charger. Bought a cheap one at Wal Mart in Del Rio and it's a POS. Not sure if my youngest son accidentally deleted photos, but there's not many left. They left just this morning so I'll get some up later.  :icon_cool:
