Just tried CMC during the past couple of weeks.
So, we should be expecting a trip report with lots of pictures soon? :rolling:

I'm not in the crowd that likes to take pictures of motel rooms and post them; never found pictures of beds and toilets all that appealing.

Trip summary: I hiked a number of places that aren't in the 'official' NPS guide; going mostly cross-country. I'm happy to report that I encountered no park rangers on any backcountry roads or trails, and rarely even had to pass one on the road. Hiking where I did, I didn't even see any tourists. The few times I was in PJ it seemed there were volunteers behind the desk. I could almost pretend I wasn't in the park...except for that tax receipt stuck to my windshield all week.

I did have one interesting encounter with a park ranger at the entrance taxation booth. I had gotten my tax stamp late the night before at the newly installed automated tax collection facility at PJ...which looks somewhat like an ATM, except it takes rather than gives. When I came in the park a few days later I was running a little late (I usually planned my approach to the taxation booths to pass before they open, thus further minimizing any need to interact with the revenue agents deceptively costumed as environmental protectors). The tax specialist looked at me, looked at the tax stamp and then looked puzzled. It soon became apparent that this person had never seen such a tax receipt before and asked 'they've got it working?'. Well, gee, I guess so since it was actively obstructing my view of the scenery (the thing is about 6" long).

Thus, I continued on my merry way (I was not offered the traditional map/brochure...I guess the unexpected shift in the paradigm of tax collection was overwhelming) somewhat bemused to once again know the left hand of the NPS does not know what the right hand is doing and that the people you'd expect would be the first to know the automated dispenser was working clearly weren't in the information loop.  :eusa_clap: :rolling: :willynilly:
