Food: good options for Vegetarians??
« on: November 10, 2009, 04:45:30 PM »
Hey there -

I know that Texas is not exactly the kind of place you'd go if you were a vegetarian...but even vegetarian want to see BB  :icon_lol:

so my questions is pretty simple: is it easy to find veggie options in the Terlingua area?

thanks!

The Starlight has a few veggie options:

The Lajitas restaurants may have a few more options:

The Phat Cafe used to be a good place for vegetarians, but I understand they're no longer in business.

For most of the places out there, you could always ask if the chef/cook could whip something up off the menu.

Kathy's Kosmic Kowgirl Kafe should also have at least one veggie option if you do eggs and cheese....

Almost every place has a veggie option.  Maybe not the Big Bend Motel Cafe, but most others.

Last time we ate at the Gage Hotel, there were NO vege options, except a over-priced, super small dinner salad.
What I suggest is bringing your own food, find a great spot, and eat your own vegeburger, or vege hotdog, etc. Isn't that half the fun about coming to this remote country anyways? I just don't understand people who show up late at the lodge to ck in and are SURPRISED that there are no food items available at 10p! Then, more surprised when the staff tells a elderly couple to go back down and try to find food at the Starlight...! PLEASE staffers, don't send people on a wild goose chase that could very easily get elderly people lost in the middle of no-where! Also, I wish more people could ck out this site so they can see what to expect when they get here.
Through the window and around the bend.
down the gap road, to the top of the rim...
                      I have been.

Also check out the Lipsmaking Vegetarian Backpacking book for camping/backpacking trips.  Some good recipes.

When I was last there a few months ago the Cottonwood grocery in Study Butte was stocking a decent variety of non meat products.  I am not a vege but I do like my vegetables with my small cuts of meat.
