OPENING OF REBUILT RIO GRANDE VILLAGE NATURE TRAIL BOARDWALK AT BIG BEND NATIONAL PARKMembers of the park's Maintenance and Resource Management crews recently completed a large endeavor to rebuild the boardwalk across the beaver pond on the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail. To recognize and celebrate the efforts of the many employees who worked on the boardwalk a ribbon cutting is scheduled for November 30 at 10:30 AM. The ceremony will occur on the boardwalk platforms of the nature trail located in the Rio Grande Village campground. A short ceremony, refreshments, and photo opportunities of the boardwalk will be offered. The visiting public and local community is invited and encouraged to attend. The former boardwalk was lost during the flood waters of fall 2008. After the flood many roads, facilities, trails, and other park resources needed immediate restoration, cleaning, and repair. The boardwalk was a large and long-term project that has now been completed and improved from the former boardwalk. The new boardwalk includes three floating docks, anchors which will allow it to rise with future flood waters, and benches for wildlife and bird viewing. Also, the new boardwalk restores access to the nature trail beyond the pond. The boardwalk is made from sustainable materials that should provide for a long life cycle. "We are very pleased to be able to provide the new boardwalk and benches for visitors to enjoy and to provide the best access to the nature trail and riparian habitats of the beaver pond," said Big Bend National Park Superintendent William Wellman. "We invite you to stop by to help us celebrate the opening of the new boardwalk."
