Boquillas Crossing

Hey!!...get a load of this:

  A good friend of mine from Las Norias de Boquillas, Sat-phoned   me TODAY  to let me know that the Jardin Canyon is being reopened as we speak. They are blasting away all the rocks and debris to clear the path once again all the way up to the natural reserve. They have these cattle up there and horses and the Muzquiz Veterinarian is headed up the canyon to tend the animals.

  Also, the Boquillas Bar is officially open for business. More restaurants are being opened there, there seems to be a lot of crews there cleaning, building and making things tidy for us to visit.

  First 100 visitors get a round of Beers and a shot of Tequila, plus a game of pool. .....Man, that cerveza sure tastes better up there.

Lacho Falcon Jr?...not his son, his nephew called me today from Muzquiz. He says there is a lot of hooplah in Boquillas for the upcoming reopening events in April or May 2012. Now what saddens me is that on the U.S. side there is a lot prepping going on, but on the Boquillas side there is dire need to rebuild the river road to and from Boquillas. They need heavy equipment machinery to do this. The Federal Government has not yet stepped in to do these works, I am thinking this is an election year here, so other issues take more priority than Boquillas.

  My recommendations to him is to unite with the other Ejido folks and bring this up with the Federal Authorities in Muzquiz,Coahuila. Which all of them come for supplies, medical check ups and visiting relaitives. Plus many have homes there too, and organize some sort of visitation. He says, he will call me again in a couple of weeks and let me know how everything is progressing. I will surely let every one know here.

 On another subject, i also visited with him in regards to the Electricity grid in Boquillas that was set up by CFE Power Company, some time ago. I asked him if it was still operational. He told that there were some transformers and poles still up on some parts of Boquillas, but for the most part it was all gone. So it looks as though, if any grid conectivity will be available, it will have to start from scratch, again.

 Also, just so you know. Eventhough they are not connected to any power grid, adn some houses have Solar Power juice, there is a major power line that comes from CFE Carbon II and CFE Rio Escondido Power plants and travels directly to the State of Chihuahua, so setting up a high tension line to Boquillas, would be a none issue for the Power company. That in turn would also provide them with Internet service (currently being tested for national launch by CFE)...and with that, some sort of phone services. All much further down the road, in my very humble opinion.

 And one last comment, I also mentioned that Rawles Williams became a member of this board, he wrote that he lived some time a go in Boquillas...back in the 80's. He does not remember you, but to my surprise back then, there use to be a lot of Gringos living in Boquillas as well. Or at least, they have lived there during the course of time. So maybe Rawles, if you let me know how you were called there maybe i can look some friends of yours there.

Nice story on the long history of visiting birders, there are many tourists which i was not aware of whom are also interested in the reopening of the Boquillas crossing. Read it and it will surely bring memories back from when you could do this.

Who Will Be the First to Cross the New, High-Tech, Unmanned Border Crossing at Big Bend National Park?.

  The days when we will do this again, are almost around the corner. See you there,soon enough.

And I had thought the Border Patrol building in Boquillas was impressive!  I wonder what the path to the river and the actual crossing looks like?

 I already tried and checked out a guy who posted a trip to Boquillas...maybe get some updated pictures of the place itself. Check out where they are going to put in and take out. But nada, so far we here have the best pics around...or so we think,

The latest most credible rumor I hear - the crossing will open right after the Thanksgiving holidays.  Makes sense.  Avoid the crowds with the new untested automated border crossing system and it is after the election.  Keep your fingers crossed.
