Friend died in Big Bend last weekend
« on: August 05, 2013, 08:11:20 AM »
Friend of mine died in the park saturday. College student, wondering if anyone had any details. I haven't heard anything other than he passed away while hiking in Big Bend.  I am assuming it was in the NP..

Three college kids in relatively good shape. Heard they got low on water about 6 miles in on the rim trail and turned back (they planned to do the loop in a day). Don't know what they carried but it wasn't enough. One of them died from heat stroke most likely. Getting more details but still don't know the whole story. Folks just don't understand how brutal that place is in summer. They were not from anywhere around here. Big Bend in August sure isn't Kansas.. )-:}

I'm thinking they may have been trying the south rim rather than the main loop. One reason I'm trying to find more information.

According to the  Big Bend Gazette.

FATALITY ON MARUFO VEGA TRAIL IN BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
by The Big Bend Gazette on August 5, 2013
On August 3, 2013, a search was conducted for Nicholas Bull, 24, last residing in Midland, Texas.  Nicholas had been hiking on the Marufo Vega Trail with two friends when the group ran out of water and became distressed.  One member of the group hiked out to get help, and a search began that same day by Park Rangers and US Border Patrol agents.  The search team located Mr. Bull, who was deceased when discovered near the trail.  An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, though temperatures during the day were very high.

“We are truly saddened by this tragic death,” stated Acting Superintendent David Elkowitz, “and offer our condolences to the Bull family and friends.”

Thanks, that answers a few questions. Nick was a summer geology intern from Michigan. Other two are interns as well.

The desert in the summer is brutal, especially to the uninitiated.   :icon_frown:

So sorry to read that.  That trail requires a lot of water in the spring and fall.  Doing that trail in the summer would be very difficult unless hiking at night, as you are exposed pretty much the entire way until you get into the canyon that descends into to river.  Prayers assured for the Bull family and friends.

I am really sorry to hear this news.  Marufo Vega would be one of the hottest places they could have been.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

This is sad news indeed. The temperature at the RGV weather station reached 108 degrees late that Saturday afternoon.

Very sad news.  I just hate it when this happens.  And, I know darn well that the SAR team hates having to do a recovery instead of a rescue.

FYI for those not familiar with it.

Interns for NPS or Interns for someone else?
