Yep. It's being reported in most national news outlets as of last night and this morning. Sounds pretty bad.

Taking Zinke out of things...

They are board members. Paid... advisory board...members and they only had a few months left in their term. Did their pay result in less pay for the real working people in the field? The smoke and mirrors that happens with ALL news outlets today always prompts me to dig a little (followed HMOD's link) past the title to see what is in there. They were going to leave anyway... by now everyone should be aware that "the media" leads you. Joseph Goebbels would be proud of all of  them. Once you have a "favorite team" your perception is skewed. "Cleaning house" by an administration is normal protocol. Did we have a bipartisan panel before BO was elected? Did we need one? Or was the creation of the board "payment" for votes? Did BO "clean house too"? His handlers in the media didn't report unfavorable acts. So how would we find out?

"The bipartisan panel was appointed by President Barack Obama and the terms of all members who quit were set to expire in May."

Settle Down  :icon_biggrin: or (we) might have to petition for some pro-Trump time.

I'm completely unbiased at this point. I watched CNN once, MSNBC once, and Fox once... After weighing in on all of the political opinions, I've come to the conclusion that I hate all politicians and news organizations  :eusa_eh: ???

Two things are always true

1. The devil's in the details

and

2. Follow the money

Sad, but 24 hour news and instantaneous reporting tends to muddy the waters of truth. In past, REAL journalists verified their stories before publishing. Anybody with a keyboard purports to be a journalist these days. Now it's get volume out there and see how many social media "likes" and "follows" you can get.

To be sure..........
A. ALL press is biased.
B. Reporting is selective
C. Facts are omitted to influence opinion

It's the world we live in. Lying is a profession. It is up to use to ferret out the real truth.

That's my take :willynilly:

Okay, let's drill down.

The board has been continually in existence since 1935. It's members are appointed by the Interior Secretary, not the President. Here is a list of the members (as of three days ago, before the mass resignation).  Pretty impressive group.

https://www.nps.gov/resources/advisoryboardmembers.htm

I don't think 75% of that board resigned "too pursue other opportunities", as they say.  The fact that their terms were going to expire in a just a few months anyway makes it pretty clear they were resigning in protest because they did not feel this administration was acting in the best interests of the National Parks system. If you read the NPR article carefully, it looks likely that the resignations would have been ten instead of nine, but one of the board members (Bilmes) was not yet finished with a long-term research project which would have been scuttled by her resignation. From what I can tell, most of these board members were seriously interested in the work the board was doing. Were they friendly with Obama? Probably, they were appointed during his administration (not by him, though). The author of the letter, the Board's Chair, former Alaska governor Tony Knowles, is a pretty straight-shooting guy and a definite political moderate. He was appointed to the Board by then-Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, again - no screaming liberal.  Here's Knowles' wikipedia bio:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Knowles_(politician)

And here is the letter Knowles (with the knowledge and approval of the 8 other resigning members) sent to Interior Secretary Zinke:

http://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/documents/national/letter-of-resignation-from-members-of-the-national-park-system-advisory-board/2711/

I don't think this is a purely media-created kerfuffle.

Here's the formal part of the process for getting on the board. Also looks like the Trump administration was NOT expecting to lose nine members of the board anytime soon.

See the charter, which states that total annual expenses of the board including staff support is $200K, so I don't think any of  the members are in it for the money, as has been suggested above.

In any event, Zinke now has a clean slate here and has also fashioned many others by cancelling the work of numerous other committees and projects, about 200 if I recall correctly.

Anyone care to conjecture what productive and positive changes will result from these actions?

Hey, my wife just retired.  I could use any extra pocket change.

The devils in the details.......It seems unlikely that the total cost of such a body is only 200k. That may be the cost of having 2 full time staff members

" The Secretary may hire 2 full-time staffers to meet the needs of the Board."

"Upon the request of the Board, the head of any Federal department or agency, or instrumentality is authorized to make any of the facilities and services of such department, agency or instrumentality to the Board, on a non refundable basis, to assist the Board in carrying out its duties"

"All members of the Board shall be reimbursed for travel and per diem in lieu of subsistence expenses during the performance of duties of the Board while away from home or their regular place of business"

And........

"Knowles told The Washington Post that the board, despite being required to meet twice a year, has not convened since President Trump took office"........so if they don't meet what's the point??
