New Superintendent Named
« on: August 15, 2018, 08:25:02 PM »
https://www.nps.gov/bibe/learn/news/krumenaker-named-superintendent-of-big-bend-national-park.htm

“Robert “Bob” Krumenaker, a veteran National Park Service (NPS) superintendent experienced in natural resource management, has been named superintendent of Big Bend National Park by NPS Intermountain Region Director Sue Masica. Krumenaker, superintendent of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northern Wisconsin since 2002, will assume his new duties on Sept. 17.

The promotion marks his return to Texas, where Krumenaker held his first permanent NPS job at Big Thicket National Preserve in the early 1980s. His 41-year Park Service career has taken him from half a dozen seasonal jobs in several western parks and monuments to resource and leadership roles in NPS Washington headquarters, in two regional offices and at major national parks from Zion in Utah to Shenandoah in Virginia and the Everglades in Florida.

Welcome Bob, and may you make BBC a regular part of your night-table reading.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Agree with Dprather, welcome Bob!

Bio says he enjoys woodworking, he might want to bring some wood with him!  :ecomcity:

Hopefully with his leadership experience he can bring about some continuity and new ideas like bringing in/back a good electronic permit system.

Well, we can hope for some regulatory sanity, rational management actions and a user-friendly focus, but don't be disappointed when it doesn't occur.

One does not become a park superintendent by rocking the boat or making bold changes.

Benefit of doubt is given for change, until it becomes unearned.

Yeah.....change gives the “impression” of progress.

I watched this. It's about climate change so the interview had a narrow focus

Three comments:

a) Remarkably, he was able to be interviewed without lapsing into NPS bureau-speak. Articulate, informed and conversational.

b) He lapsed at least once when he referred to "my park." While that can be accepted as a reference to the area he manages, it could have been phrased differently.

c) Later, he did affirmatively state he was managing public land. Something you don't often hear in this agency, where proprietary ownership is ingrained.

He also commented about the public liking the parks but wondered if the public liked the agency (much paraphrased here...I didn't rewind it).

He's coming from a less than 70,000 acre park to one more than ten times the size, but there's not a huge difference in the visitation numbers he quoted. The Big Bend staff likely is a bit larger but not significantly so.

His professional background is in science, so that would imply an ability to view things objectively and critically, with facts being important. Will that translate into much needed changes in process and attitude at Big Bend?

It's too soon to tell.

However, it appears a personal conversation involving differing viewpoints about parks easily could be done with this guy. That's something hard to do in that agency.

I like that he's wearing the uniform ball cap rather than the flat hat.

Worth a try.

It would be refreshing if the new guy was understanding of a comment I made here years ago about the NPS management mindset and actions seeming to hold "that we all are dolts that have to be rigidly managed for our own good and that our enjoyment is totally subject to what the NPS has deemed acceptable."

A lighter hand would not impair anything.

I just want everyone here to know, after having some very good dialogue with the new Super, I am very excited to welcome him to the park.

He seems to be a genuine stand-up guy and I look forward to getting to know him better when he begins his work.  I really like him and I think you all will too.

I don't anticipate him coming here to participate directly, but he has read this thread and found it "interesting."

Here's to the new Sup!
