It's the headline link on Drudge right now.  Sounds like Border Patrol is standing firm on it though.

I like what Wellman said:

Quote
"People that want to be engaged in illegal activities along the border, ones that are engaged in those activities now, they're still going to do it," said William Wellman, Big Bend National Park's superintendent. "But you'd have to be a real idiot to pick the only place with security in 300 miles of the border to try to sneak across."

  • The road goes on forever & the party never ends...
Yeah, once it hits the AP, news centers around the country will run with it.  Hopefully a bunch of people completely uneducated on the situation don't get it shut down.  Luckily they are well underway on the crossing.

Let's hope this doesn't become a political football.  It prolly will though.

Why all the hype now?  I thought this issue was already decided and it was pretty much a done deal, what with the ceremony back in October.

It definitely is scary to see all the comments being posted in response to the Fox story.

I agree.

I still think that they should have opened it up manned by U.S. Customs personnel. This
would have severely cut the sensational headline factor and the uneducated outrage comments.
I understand the cost savings they are trying to achieve, but compared to ...well I'll stop there or it will get
political. They could have unmanned it after a few months or a year with fewer headlines and most likely fresh
data at hand to back up their decision.
I'm just happy that they are opening it up and I hope they will do what's necessary to keep it that way, regardless of
any political or financial pressures that may develop.  :crossedfingers:

The building will be manned by NPS personnel in case something "unusual" happens.  It's just the re-entry/passport validation part that will be handled remotely.

Thank you Jimbob for bringing this to our attention.  A rule change is required and proposed NOT final.  Probably why there is all the flack now.

  • Be Amazing.
Man, I cannot wait to check out the Del Carmens!  Or get a brew and some food in boquillas!
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

So far the comments are about 2 to 1 in favor of opening the crossing.  Let's keep up the momentum.

In my very limited experience, the more substantive comments will most likely be posted near the close of the December 27, 2011 deadline.  It could be a good idea to hold back and post your comment(s) to also take into account these comments.  Late comments  may  allow you to be more substantive in your support of the reopening of the Boquillas crossing. Just a thought.
