Wildland Fire from Loop Camp to Gauging Station

Ran across this news release from March 3rd while hunting for staff listings...  :eusa_eh:

Wildland Fire at Big Bend National Park

Anyone hear anything about this?  I know they had been doing controlled burns along Gravel Pit area IIRC. Probably much less paperwork to have an accidental fire.

I'm sure it was a totally legit controlled burn... I mean accidental fire. :)

The NPS burned Los Alamos NM to the ground in 2000, with a poorly planned and poorly managed "controlled" burn, at Bandelier Natl Mon,  which they immediately lost control of. They ignited  the damn thing when even the dumbest among us would have said "I wouldn't do that if I were you" considering the weather conditions.

After that, it seems they pretty much have eliminated the phrase "controlled burn." I believe the favored PC phrase now is "prescribed burn," which avoids the misperception that anything about it will be controlled. However, "prescribed" leaves an impression that someone knows what they are doing. Expect at some point for the NPS to find an even more innocuous descriptive term that eliminates any possibility of blame being attached, regardless of undesirable outcomes which may occur.

That wildfire is centered on the exact location of the riverside beach where I found the cat, Olivia Felix last December. If she was still alive before that fire, she's probably dead now. I can't imagine she'd fare well anywhere further inland of the cane brakes.
