Birding at High Island - April 2019
« on: May 02, 2019, 07:18:50 AM »
Not a Big Bend trip report, not even a hiking or 4WD trip, just a walk in the woods (and the beach) in SE Texas.
I wanted to run this past the experts here for any help with ID's they can give. No doubt I missed some of these.

Alan--
Thank you for sharing.  :great: Are you sure that your 'hermit' thrush isn't a Swainson's thrush?

Some of your pics look to be by the Bolivar Flats. It also looks like you had a very productive day. Wonderful shots.

I re-looked at them. The first (better) picture sure looks like a Hermit vs. a Swainson's , mostly due to its reddish brown instead of grayish brown color . The second pic is really too dark for me to say anything definitive. What makes you say Swainsons ?

The first group (of shorebirds) was indeed at the Bolivar Flats.
 Thanks.

By any chance Alan, did you see the "Mexican eagles" while in the area? I don't know birds but that's what I've heard them refered to. There's two nesting in the Retillion road area. I think the real name is Caracara? Ive worked Bolivar since 2005 and have always been amazed by the  different birds that show up through out the year.

Caracara are sometimes referred to as "Mexican eagles." However, the national bird of Mexico is the Golden Eagle.

I didn't see any Crested Caracaras on this trip. I have seen them before but always further south - Port Aransas or the King ranch areas. I'd have looked a little harder if I'd known they were supposed to be in the area .

Caracaras are pretty common along the upper coast. See them all the time near  Brazoria, Lake Jackson, Anuhuac and between Houston and Galveston. Photo from Brazoria.
