Collared Lizard
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:17:52 AM »
May of last year I decided to find a dominant male at the Wichita Mountains and follow him around for a few hours each day for a couple weekends.

Found just the guy on the Bison Trail.  The 1st day he did not like me.  Finally got real close and he hissed at me.

The next weekend he was a little more accommodating.  Being so bright you have to keep an eye in the sky to stay out of the food chain. When a crow flew by, he darted under a rock. :icon_wink:

My favorite photo from the more than 500 photos and about 40 hours of following him around. I call it Master of His Domain.

Wow.  He's colorful.

I believe this is also a collared lizard which I photographed near Alto Relex.  If so, is this a female, different variety or do they change their colors?

Western Collard Lizard near the base of Alto Relex.

Also, this little guy (and a bunch more like him) was photographed in Grapevine Hills.  Any idea what kind of Lizard he (or she) is?

Hi Kevin,

I'm guessing that is a female.  Collared Lizards do have regional coloring. I've been told the ones in the Wichitas are the most colorful.

I got a few photos of that same small lizard in Boquillas Canyon.  Don't know what they are.

I got shots of this guy with 4 different females. Here is one rated G.   ;) I have others that are a little more revealing.

Here's one we took pics of in Death Valley a few days ago--note the long toes for keeping it off the hot sand, and the side flaps (undeployed) for radiating heat:

So, is that coloration year-round or only during mating season?

The color is brightest during mating season and then fades.
