Enchanted Rock 11-28-09
« on: November 28, 2009, 10:20:10 PM »
I finally got my daughter out to Enchanted Rock. My wife Susan, Dad, older brother Brian and his son, Dawson, joined us for a quick half day excursion. It was unbelievably windy, probably well over 60mph up top at times.

Jennifer just took off and left 9 year old Dawson in the dust. He proceded to "take a break" and was last heard whining to Brian about being tired. We pressed on without them.

Did I mention it was windy?

That old Tilley hat loses a bit of style in the wind...

Time to go check out the cave.

Well, maybe not down there...

It was a tight squeeze up through this area for Jennifer's out of shape Dad...

Family portrait time.

Be sure and check out how Jennifer's portrait shot of Mom & Dad at the same spot turned out here

Time to find a spot out of the wind for a snack break.

still a few more to follow...

Brian and Dawson finally make it up top, so naturally we had to go show them the cave.

Jennifer led the way this time.

Check out the line of cars waiting to get into the park in the background.

We hit the road PDQ for the Dairy Queen in Fredericksburg with only a short delay to buy Jennifer a snow cone. The town was just as overrun with tourists as the park. Even with the crowds and wind, it was a great day.

Beautiful shots of ER, it's been a long time since I was out there, the wind made the air really clear!
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

Richard, what a great family outing!  Looks like three generations made it to top? That's special.

That area reminds me of the backside hike up to Stone Mtn, GA...  just about as many people, too.

Nice pictures, I was there about three weeks ago. I knew the cave was on the park map but didn't know it was easily accessible! I'll have to check it out next time.

We did another half-day excursion today. Temps were in the high 90's by the time we got off the trail. It didn't help that we didn't get boots on the ground until 11:00. All pics were taken with my crappy cell-phone, as the camera forgot to make the trip to Austin from Houston.

Jennifer taking off after Chloe, Justin, and Brandon.

"I'm dying!!!"

Much happier up top in the shade.

Echo Canyon and beyond.

Jennifer and Chloe enjoying some shade.

Jennifer tries to push a boulder down the hill.

Our boy scout troop's favorite campsite in Echo Canyon, now the site for a latrine.

Jennifer "hit the wall" in Echo Canyon and I had to carry her out on my shoulders.

Still a bit whiny. She cheered up when we hit the DQ in Fredericksburg.
