Fossil Rim
« on: March 04, 2008, 08:49:34 PM »
So I took my boys to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center last Saturday.  It is a drive-through zoo near Glen Rose.  We had been there about ten years ago but hadn't been back since.  It is still in beautiful country but I was disappointed in the facilities.  They were much more run down than the last time I was there and the roads were in terrible shape.  The prices were steep as well.  Some of the animals looked unhealthy, too.  :icon_cry: I know that my attitude towards zoos has changed a lot in the last few years and that may have something to do with my disappointment but it seemed somehow uncomfortable to see all these "wild" animals begging on the side of the road for food and being willing to let people reach out of their cars to pet them and feed them.  It was cool to watch my son feed a giraffe that stuck it's head in the sun roof of the car, though.  :icon_lol: We had a great day as a family but it would take a lot to convince me to go back to Fossil Rim again.  It sure is no substitute for Big Bend!

I have only been there 1 time and that was several years ago. Some people from a photo forum i a member at got together to do a group tour.

It was planned out well in advance the organizer talked with the people at fossil rim Many times before the trip and even several days before the trip. When we got there, they were not ready, not enough vehicles to take the group and so on and so on. we did manage to get going on the tour and got some great photos.

The animals seemed in good health back then so maybe it has somewhat declined since then.

My dad took my brother and I out to Fossil Rim when we were kids..an ostrich stuck its head in the window and swiped my brothers cheeseburger then proceeded around to my dad's side...well my dad promptly rolled up his window and that ticked off the giant bird so it ripped the windshield wiper off our car....taught us a lesson...NOT TO GO BACK THERE!
Carved upon my stone: my body lie but still I ROAM

Last year, I went with a photography tour. They let is in the back roads and such. I had a great time and had great photos. One photographer enjoyed giraffe saliva drooled down upon his head, then camera.

Fun!
Life is NOT fair, but it is still GOOD!
