Frio River / Concan Report
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:27:06 PM »
The wife and I headed out last Wed for Concan to enjoy some time on the Frio River. We checked into the cabin unloaded the truck, put on the swim suits and head over to the deep swim hole. The water was unusually warm for the "Frio" River at this deep part of the river. Any way it was nice just relaxing in the water an soaking it all in.

Thursday morning we head over to one of the tube / shuttle places and get dropped off at the location. at the beginning we had to walk about 50 yards to get to the section deep enough to float on, and the water was much colder here, but not like in the past when the water was flowing and really deep.

we were the only ones on the river and we had a grand time watching and listening to all the birds. We actually spotted a peahen and her baby. I had never seen a baby peacock, and it was pretty darn cute.  We finish up out float in about 2 1/2 hours. we head back to the cabin for some lunch and a nap.

after the nap we head over to the swim hole again for an hour then grab a quick bite to eat, then head up the road to the Concan Bat cave to watch the flight. This was our second time to view the bat flight and it is still impressive. This time there were 4 hawks circiling around catching bats for a late night snack, so I concentrated my photo efforts on that. I just wish I have my bigger lens with me as my smaller lens was really straining to get some of these shots.

Friday we head over to another shuttle and tube service to have them drop us off at a different section we had not floated before. We spent more time walking then floating on this part of the river, but it was really beautiful, and the areas we did float in were nice and calm. again we had most of the river to our selves. It took us about 3 hours to complete that section and we were both really tired. I was really too tired to eat and we decided to just crash and eat a big dinner.

Saturday we headed over to Garner to do some swimming there and go south of the dam to where every one swings off the big rock there. we head on back to the cabin for a bit, eat some dinner then head over to Lost Maples, Via Leaky and on over on HWY 337. We have a nice quiet  walk back on the east trail to the little pond area near the big rocks and just hand out there for a while.

then we headed on home sunday.... it was a great time even though we sent more time walking the river than we did floating it, but a bad day on the river still beats a good day at work :eusa_dance:

Nice report James!
I love the bat pics!! I haven't been to Concan in about 30 years...gonna have to go back...especially to see the bats. Is the cave open to the public...for bat flight viewing...not  spelunking.
  Thanks!

that cave is on private property, but every night from March to September there is a bat viewing, unless its raining or a holiday. Cost 12 per person to enter. you meet at the gate to the ranch at 7:30 and the guide lets everyone in and you follow a road back to a parking area, then its a short walk up a small hill to where the cave is. they have it roped off so you cant get in.

you can get directions from the store called Neal's in Concan

Great report! Awesome photos! That bat flight must be awesome in person (and a little scary). I've been to Concan a few times, but never to see the bats (didn't know that access existed).

I take it there was really water in the Frio? Seems like it's been way too dry lately.
best regards,
TJ Avery
