Frio River in Concan
« on: December 13, 2008, 01:28:48 PM »
Earlier this year the wife and I went to the Frio river to do some tubing and relaxing. I am JUST now getting to those photos and report.

The Frio river is cold for some odd reason even in July, but its fun anyway. We had a great time just relaxing and taking it easy.

We went to see the bat flight of Concan which was very impressive for us since it was out first time to see a bat flight.

Another night we drove out to the Devils sink hole to watch the bat flight there. The colony here was not very large at the time and it was not as near impressive as the flight in Concan.

Anyway on to the photos

Those are very nice photos.  Number 2 has some impressive colors.  Number 6 is just plain creepy, but a very cool capture.  3,4,5 are my other favorites.  That bat shots are all cool.

James,

I take it you were at the Concan bat cave.  When did it become public?  I went hunting with friend who had a lease on that ranch and the bat cave wasn't public then, or at least it wasn't open to the public during hunting season.  My group and I went into that cave...it stinks of guano pretty bad.  Had an interesting/stupid experience in the cave.  One of my drunken buddies fired his .38 while we were inside a good hundred yards or so.  Have you ever seen thousands of bats flying directly into your face?  I have.

Yes this was the Concan Bat Cave. This trip was back in July of 2008. I dont think this is hunting season at that time, but we had to wait out on the highway for the guide to show up, we followed the guide on a dirt road back to a parking area where the cave is. it was really neat, stunk like crazy once the bats started to come out.

It was $10 a person to get back there, but well worth it.

Cool! Is there a contact number? We'll be at Lost Maples over Spring Break and that would make for a neat side trip. LOVE the Frio area!

That is awesome. Thanks for sharing. I love the Frio right there near Concan - it's beautiful.

I really like the photo looking into the sunset with the bats and the couple silhouetted. Very nice!

I do not think there is a contact number to get access. Its almost a daily thing from what I understand from March to September. So looks like you cant go until March

But you should be able to call the store in Concan where they have the flyer's and directions to the meet point along the highway to see what the current situation is. I cant find hte number to the store, but this is for the cabin reservations and they should be able to direct you (830) 232-6118.

The cave is just off hwy 127 between Concan and Sabinal.

The Store in Concan is called Neal's and its right by the river. If going south on 83 form Lost Maples it will be on your left hand side before the HWY dips down to the river.

Neals Cafe right across the street from the Store has a decent burger and fries and the Chicken fried steak is not to shabby either.

Thanks for the info, James! We're familiar with Neal's! We always stop by and walk down to the old bridge when we're in the area. First place my hubbie and I camped at together was at Neal's.
