Get me out of here!
« on: August 08, 2011, 01:56:34 PM »
Just found a cheap flight and car rental to Denver, 8 days 7 nights for ~$300.  I think I'm gonna go for it.
I had been considering hitching or bussing from Denver to a location and walking into the forest to keep costs down.  But the flexibility of a car for the price is worth it to me.
Now all is in the picking of some sweet mountain relief in mid September.

I know the feeling...  after 40+ days of +100F I had enough.  1 week in Idaho was completely refreshing.

A place where they consider 90F a 'heat wave'.  lol

just got back from two weeks in Estes Park / Rocky Mt. Nat. park
temps were in the 40's at night , 70s to low 80s during the day , in town. With some elevation much lower temps with snow on the ground.

big crowds but still very nice

Estes Park - Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.  I love it when snow is blown off the surrounding peaks in the afternoon.  Snow on the ground in August?  Where?

Pictures?

Now the difficulty is choosing where to go.  RMNP is surely a choice.  I'm looking at Idaho Springs area and Lost Creek Wilderness, too.  My basic idea is to spend 2-3 nights out in a couple different places.  I could do 5 nighter if I found the right one.  If I do RMNP, I might give Longs Peak a try.  If I do IS, I probably go for Bierstadt and hang at Abyss Lake.  Lost Creek has McCurdy Mountain.  Trying to keep it closer to Denver so I don't spend time driving across the state.
Since I'm not an avid Colorado hiker, I'm a bit overwhelmed.

You're going at the best time of year.  The crowds will be gone and the weather should be great.

I also just returned from RMNP.  The contrast with BIBE couldn't have been more extreme, especially in regards to the number of people. The pine beetle kill off has concentrated most visitors over to the east side of the park, us included.

Our first day we passed well over 100 people on a 6 mile hike.  For long stretches, I couldn't walk over 60 seconds before pulling over to let someone pass.  Mostly a blue jeans, windbreaker tied around the waist, bottled water in one hand crowd. Granted it was high season and we were only day hiking on trails. It'll be along time until I return.

If you do go and want an established campground, I recommend the Moraine Park campground, A loop.

The weather though....wow.

RMNP is the national park where I discovered zone camping.  It was because of the crowds and the only way to be able to camp in the park.  It was wonderful and we didn't see another person the whole time,  although the second week in September should have much smaller crowds than the peak summer months.

We were in CO the last week of July. My kids and I hiked about 5 miles of the Abyss Lake trail, starting near Guanella Pass Road... Only saw one person the whole time.
Wish we had been able to go farther but got stared too late in the day and had to turn back. There are some really cool ponds along the creek we followed.  Mortal sin... did not have batteries for the camera by that point... used them all up at the touristy spots (Mt. Evans drive) ... Next time we will have the backpacking gear and it will be a different story
We also found some nice BLM (free) spots to car camp just north of the actual pass, to the west of the road off an old forestry road. I think the sign said "silver dollar lake"
Are we there yet?

In addition to finishing what we started to Abyss Lake, Next time we go (and there will be many more trips) we intend to do this hike, possibly camping along the way somewhere..... breathtaking!
