Grand Tetons
« on: July 14, 2012, 10:35:38 PM »
I took a ride up to the Tetons last month. It's an interesting place to visit. I was there in November a few years ago and it's much more sane. There were too many tourists this time for my blood. One of the Grizzly bear cubs that I photographed was run over, in the sage brush, on the same day that I left. It's hard enough to survive in the wild but throw in an idiot or 2 and it's nearly impossible.

I took a lot of images. Quite a few are here: http://wildlightimagingstudio.com/p1069619418

The new ones start at #22

Heres a few shots from the trip so you don't have to wade through the whole folder:

The milky way from Shadow Mountain

I got lucky and I was up  on Shadow Mountain when an aurora started

Great Horned Owl with food for the chicks

Great Gray Owl with food

Tatonka w/ calf

Jackson Lake

Grizzly sow

Grizzly Cub

Moose (not that great but the best opportunity that I had)

Flicker feeding chicks

Jackson Lake again

Very very nice pics. Always love the Tetons. The aurora was a special bonus.

Beautiful shots and an aurora!

Spent a lot of time in and around the Hole back in the 70's and even back then the only sane time to be there was after Labor Day and before ski season started.  Too many folks with too much money and not much common sense.

Thanks y'all.

Jeff- the Milky Way wasn't bad either. Not Big Bend black but definitely worth shooting. This is a good year for aurora up north.

Mule Ears- I went into Yellowstone for a day. I couldn't even find a parking place in some of the thermal areas. I didn't go back. I'm planning a late Sept / early Oct trip. Hopefully I can fit one in. It's supposed to be more sane then

Here are a couple of time lapse clips. I didn't get many usable frames of the aurora. It only takes a little bit of focus error and I managed to do that on my first 1 hour run.

Late Sept. probably better, I have been snowed out Columbus Day weekend several times and they will close the road to Yellowstone around the first of Oct.

During that time frame you used to go into the Million Dollar Cowboy bar  and actually find cowboys just finished with bring stock down from the high country for the winter.   :13:

I'm trying to fit a weekend at Mesa Verde into the return trip and that is booked for 10/12 thru 10/14 so late Sept / early Oct is my timeframe.

I was in Yellowstone for a few days a few years ago. I was there in late Nov and they closed the road at the end of my two days (which is why I left). It didn't snow much before I was there and I think the thing that decided when to close the roads that year was the prep that the park has to do to get ready for the winter visitors. The road up north was still open but not much was happening so I went down to Jackson.

I have friends that live in Idaho and Jackson and they let me know when things are starting to get good. Unfortunately I couldn't go in mid-May like they wanted me too.

The thing that most caught me off guard was the high number of photographers. There were easily 200 photographers plus RV's and tourists on the bear sighting (bear jam) that I went to. Over 100 at the moose. Maybe 30 - 40 at the Great Gray Owl. No more than 15 or 20 at the peak and fewer than 10 normally at the Great Horned Owl. I spent most of my time on them.

VERY nice pics, iCe! :great:

I leave tomorrow to become part of the zoo for ten days.  I know it will be packed, but I'm hoping I will be up and about before the madness fully sets in.  No backpacking, but I intend to go on extensive day hikes which--I hope--will also give relief from the crowds.
Wake me when it's time to go.

Thank you. We were up and rolling by 4:30am and in camp at the top of Shadow Mountain or at my friends house in Jackson by 9:30. Asleep by 11:00 -  2:00am for 7 days in a row. We never really beat the crowds. But... it was still a great trip.

The day hikes will help

Incredible photos!  Awesome!

I dig the moose.
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

Real nice photos! Outstanding job.

P.S. Photos 42 and 44-50 are mis-labled as a Great Gray Owl, should be Great Horned.
I have a really good story, wanna hear?
