Just started planning a thru-hike of Jordan
« on: October 12, 2017, 10:43:56 AM »
I've been thinking about hiking Petra and the Wadi Rum for years. Today I saw this: https://www.outsideonline.com/2238001/new-jordan-trail-calling-us

I recognize a sign when I see one. Throw in a side-trip to Jerusalem, and I'm there. I figure I'll do this in five years, when I turn 65 and my kids have all left home.  I'll have to find a time when the crowds are low so I can hike alone, but the weather is tolerable. Stay tuned, I'll post a trip report on BBC in a few years.

Are you certain you won't want a hiking partner? ;)
I roamed and rambled, and I foller'ed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was a'sounding
This land was made for you and me

EPIC

I have been giving serious consideration to the Jesus Trail across Galilee
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Haha, DRS. When I say "alone", I mean far from the madding crowd. But if another lone madman wanted to come along, I'm open to considering it.  :eusa_think:

far from the madding crowd

My dad misquoted this often as "far from the maddening crowd", which is probably how most of us think.

Dprather, that's a lot of the draw for me, too. Just being in that landscape, with that history.

I started planning a trip to the Mideast over 30 years ago. Back in '92, my girlfriend-soon-to-be-wife and I almost went. We intended to buy plane tickets to Cairo and backpack/hitch our way to Israel and Jordan, but there were a lot of bombings and shootings that year and my father literally got down on his knees and begged us not to go. Long story short, we wound up buying plane tickets to Istanbul instead and backpacked/hitched to Syria and then island-hopped our way to Greece. Great trip, but not the same thing at all.

If I wind up making this trip, I plan to finish up in Israel and do a lot of what I didn't get to do 25 years ago.

How about Montecello, UT to St. George, UT on foot and/or bicycle? Far fewer IEDs.
Just a thought.

That photo reminds me of the plate put in front of me in Abu Dhabi. I looked down and a small charred bird was looking back at me.
I’m thankful that I have traveled overseas. I survived. I’m going to quit while I am ahead.
There’s more than enough to keep me interested in the USA and Canada.
Here’s a Bucket List for you:
The North Boundary Trail and The Great Divide Trail in Canada.
Connecting to The Continental Divide Trail in the USA.
They could keep you busy for a few summers.
You might even get to see a grizzly or 3.

Ain't that the truth.  Compared to a lot of you guys on this board, I'm just getting started.  We are blessed in this nation to have so much available to us

Not really off-topic, but somewhat off-continent...

My two sons and I are, Lord willing, hiking Hadrian's Wall in June 2018.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Take your woolies. And the best tents and rain gear you can get your hands on.
Have fun!
