Needles trip
« on: June 27, 2018, 11:16:26 AM »
Thanks to some suggestions here I went to the Canyonlands Needles district in early May, and posted a report over at Bogley if anyone is interested.
I roamed and rambled, and I foller'ed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was a'sounding
This land was made for you and me

Very Nice. Thanks for throwing it out here.   :great:

Never heard of Virginia Park.  Nice find.  Can tell it is older because they still have an old style wooden sign out there instead of one of the newer ones.

Did they get the pooper truck situation figured out yet?  Last year they had one ordered and custom built so that it could make all the way out to Devil's Kitchen via SOB Hill.   But, the neckbones who spec'ed it out made it too big.  So it was useless.  I know that backpackers have to carry poop bags for Chesler Park, but they were telling us last year that the toilets were closed at Devil's Kitchen, and we would have to poop in a bag.  Luckily, they were still unlocked when we got there, but they were about topped off.

Great report DRS.

I’ll 2nd Canyonlands / Chesler Park. Pretty awesome options in the area.  For extra credit while there,  see if you can find Virgina Park, but please obey the signs and don’t enter the research area.

Sounds like you not only got the extra credit, but also an nteresting history of the area / project.

That's amusing. They only told me to poop in a bag in Chesler Park and Elephant Canyon. The toilets at Devil's Kitchen where open, so I guess they sorted it out. They seem hyper-sensitive (to some extent with good reason) about poop, I got a kick out of this sign at the Elephant Hill trailhead.

Yeah I lucked out running in to the ranger, and the ranger being cool about it.

That area out there looks so neat.  I like BiBE but when I see those Utah and New Mexico areas with the red cliffs, dirt and rocks with spots of dark green plants and trees.  I guess it reminds me of old western movies.  That always seemed to the be location whenever I saw a cowboy on TV.  I can just imagine hiking out there and looking up and catching a Native American watching me from high up on some ledge!!

Someday I plan to expand my exploration area and get out somewhere like that.  Thanks for the trip report.  Just like most of the reports on here, it's not only entertaining and educational but it sparks an interest.

I am reminded of a disturbing sign I saw in the showers at Mesa Verde.  It was of the same red circle with a person crapping under the shower fixture.

What's wrong with people?  Do they practice this at their own home?

ALWAYS wear shower shoes at public showers!

It's Asians.  Although Western-style toilets are becoming more common, in China and southeast Asia, the most common accommodation for taking care of business is essentially a hole in the floor over which the user squats.  Visitors from those parts to this country sometimes are confused by toilets and squat on the bowl, and shower stalls bear a resemblance to the accommodations back home and are used as such, hence the signage.

I guess the grate over the drain with the tiny holes to strain debris isn't enough of a clue, not to mention the small size of the hole.
