Palo Duro canyon vs Caprock Canyon
« on: October 01, 2009, 04:55:35 PM »
Hello all,

I'm leaving tomorow afternoon to go to Palo Duro canyon. I am thinking of Palo Duro instead of Caprock Canyon since I like it a little more and has trails that are a somewhat nicer, however I'd like to know from y'all which do you prefer? why?

Also, are there any interesting side trips or other attractions to see in the area? I've been to both but I'll have 2 full days since I'll be returning on Monday evening, so any suggestions are welcome.

I'll do a trip report upon my return.

I like them both, but Caprock is my preference as it is usually pretty empty people wise.  The Upper Canyon Trail at Caprock, in my opinion, is one of the best day hikes in the state.
WATER, It does a body good.

The difference for me is Caprock has Lake Theo which is great for a kayak and catching bass.
Palo Duro is relatively close to decent grocery stores etc in Canyon.  There is just enough difference in the hiking that I have to do both of them.  The rv park just at the gate to Palo Duro is $18 a night with full hookups including wifi.  Since I am a full timer there is seldom any crowds when I hit a park.  In Canyon there is a very good museum about the plains.  That  means that both have things the other doesn't.  Here is my half cents worth of opinions.

I personally prefer Caprock.  It feels much more like unspoiled country.  It is Yosemite to the Niagara Falls-ness of Palo Duro Canyon.  Far less crowded.  There's a cool dirt road that goes around the park on the eastern side that is fun to drive.  And it has a lake--which, despite its chocolate brown color, my kids thoroughly enjoyed swimming in after a day of hiking.
