In the planning stages of our trip, I made sure we knew lightning safety procedures.  And much to PPP's chagrin, I would quiz her on what to do in certain situations.  On the Santa Barbara Divide we were exposed with lightning cracking about two miles ahead of us.  We made quick time to the nearest grove of trees, even though we were hungry and tired and needed a rest.  We had our sleeping pads ready to pull out and insulate between us and the ground.
