I took two of the kids out there last weekend and we had a blast. As usual, it was empty. At the campground where we spent Friday night there were only 3 of probably 25 or 30 units occupied. While we only saw a few elk and none of the usual mule deer and turkey we did get to see a black bear.

For those who are not familiar with the area it is a 100,000 acre parcel of Carson NF considered by many to be the premier elk habitat in all of New Mexico. In fact hunting elk here is a once in a lifetime opportunity, if you draw once you are prohibited from entering the draw for that unit again. It is spectacularly beautiful with open grasslands and ponderosa forests on the east and spruce/fir and grassland on the west. It is relatively remote (access from the east is gained by following graveled roads for 30 miles through Ted Turner's Vermejo Park Ranch) and this keeps it devoid of people. I was out there over Labor Day weekend 2 years ago and saw no one else out on the trail we were on.

Great report!! It is an amazing place indeed! I spent last year's spring battling 4 feet of snow and freezing temps, but I still had a blast.

It has been discovered that research causes cancer in laboratory rats.
