Village Creek Canoe Camping
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:39:59 PM »
Took the family out for an overnight canoe trip on Village Creek, North of Beaumont. We had perfect weather. The temperature could not have been any better. There was not a bug in sight which made it even sweeter.  My hiking buddy Matt joined us in his kayak.

The boys load up their water canons.

There were a number of other paddlers on the creek but we saw only one other group set up camp and they were too far away from us to be heard or seen.

Here is our flotilla. The boys rode in the raft and we pulled it. It slowed us down but we were in no hurry.

Some of the other paddlers resting on a sandbar.

This is the sandbar we camped at. There was not a city light, person, powerline, or any other sign of civilization except the occasional sound of a distant car on highway 96 a ways off.

My wife took a nap on the sand while Matt and I set up camp. The sand on Village Creek is very white and the water is very clean. The brown color is from the tanins in the trees. However, the entire creek is lined with white sand so there is not really any mud.

Another shot of our personal sandbar for the night.

With camp set up we began to gather firewood.

My six year old set about building a sand castle.

My four year old set about to swimming.

With a little help from me we made a nice sand castle.

My wife woke up just as the men/boys were making a run for firewood on the opposite bank.

Relaxing at camp.

Another view from our camp

Our trusty canoe

Setting off from camp on Sunday morning. It sprinkled a little but not much.

On our way to the take-out.

We paddled a total of 6.4 miles. 2.3 miles the first day and the rest on day two. It was the kids first overnight canoe trip and they loved it.

It's so awesome to see parents taking their kids to outdoors.  I wish more people would do it.  Looks like an awesome trip!!!

Good times. Thanks. It's been a long time since I camped on a river. Last one was the Llano. And that must be a really stable canoe to have that camera with you.

I see you were pretty well organized. You had the camera and your wife had the paddle. How did you arrange that one??

I didn't take the SLR camera the first several paddles in the canoe but we have had the canoe out 16 times so far (most of the time with the kids IN the canoe) and we have not flipped it yet and have gotten pretty comfortable with keeping it balanced   :crossedfingers:

Ha!  We were both paddling, I just took a break to take a picture.

I was very glad to have been able to do this trip.  I had wanted to do it for some time as I had not been on an overnight canoe trip since 2003.  I didn't think we could fit it to our schedule in but after our camping friends bailed on us for a scheduled camping trip last weekend we just changed it to a canoe camping trip.  This was way better than staying in a crowded campground.
