Wichita Mountains Day Trippin'
« on: June 26, 2012, 11:30:56 AM »
Barry and I headed to the Wichita Mountains last Saturday, do a  little bushwacking, rock climbing.  They've had lots of rain so, while it was hot and sticky, there were lots of wildflowers and wildlife.

Lots of tarantulas:

Millions of millipedes--never seen anything like it:

This is our first target--NE face of Mt. Mitchell, on the west side of Charon's Garden:

Some steep and fun rock climbing up Mitchell:

The "easy" way down Mitchell, SE side; you can see Granite and Twin Rocks in teh distance; our next target is the little pointy one to the right:

The pointy rock pile from below:

Me lying on top of the pointy thing, with Mitchell, where we were earlier, in teh background:

There were, surprisingly, crawdads in the tiny water puddles in teh granite; we spawned a crawdad war by feeding them steak:

Nice flowers, etc; this is Lincoln:

Got a good flower pic:

Great pics!  I try to make it down to the Wichita Mtns several times a year...  great place to hike, rock climb and bike.... roads only other than one trail that runs around the base of Mt Scott.

My wife and I were down there this past Sunday.

Lived in Ft. Sill as a young teen, spent many a day hiking and climbing in Wichita Mts - loved the place!  Thanks for the reminder pics!!

Looks like a fun trip.  Nice pics.

I was down last weekend doing some invasive plant removal.
Having decent gear is nice, but wildlife photography is knowing your subject and getting lucky, and I love getting lucky.
