Wichita Mountains Rock Climbing
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:51:11 AM »
A few months ago (Thanksgiving weekend), I took 3 of the girls (5, 10 and 15) to the Wichita mountains in Oklahoma for a little rock climbing.  Our target was the Apple and Pear, on the flanks of Elk Mountain:

We went up a gully to the south of Elk:

Did involve some fun crack climbing:

The granite scrambling is just great:

Views to the south are nice:

Surprisingly, we found a buffalo up there:

Had some weather come in which gave us a nice rainbow from Mt. Scott:

Also, surprisingly, met Big Bend afficionados Cathy and Cameron there as well!

I try to get to the Wichita Mtns as often as I can.  It's a great place to get away from the crowds, and is usually peaceful unless the Army is doing artillery training or the trainer jets are flying around.

It's about the closest place I have found that has trail conditions similar to those in Big Bend.

I agree.  Probably why I love it so much.  A couple of us have finally been given permission to work on the trails there.  But most of my hikes are on the west end of the refuge on game trails.

I wish I could get permission to hike/backpack in the northern half of the refuge.  Would love to climb Mt. Pinchot!

I would also love top climb Pinchot.  I'm not sure they will ever agree to backpacking there, but I've hiked a number of spots in the Special Use Area on different projects. Some of the most beautiful spots on the refuge are back behind the fence.  The area of Cut Throat Gap in the far NW corner I love.  The far NE corner is great for elk and deer.

We are trying to convince them to let us backpack the fence line doing repairs, but it will probably be in and out each day.

Homero--you are obsessed with Machetes!

They are still on the floor of my bedroom.  I look at them lovingly before going to sleep every night.

I need to get a proper whet stone, some super glue, some grip tape, some duct tape, and those things within a few hours will be capable--in the right hands!--of taking over a small country!

I was stationed at Ft Sill in the 70s. Climbing Mount Scott was great fun.
