Big Canyon (in Black Gap?)
« on: May 20, 2014, 10:39:01 PM »
The most patient woman in the world bought me one of those very tactile plastic relief maps of the entire Bend area.  Now I can follow my passion for the Bend and my passion for maps and let my fingers do the walking.

I've noticed an interesting feature northeast of the Park and possibly northeast of Black Gap.

Beginning with Cupola Mountain, a feature called Big Canyon trends northeast toward the Rio Grande.  The relief of this feature makes it appear interesting.

Questions; (1) is this still in Black Gap? (2) does anyone know anything about Big Canyon?

I don't know but there is a large erosion canyon just to the east of where Black Gap Road comes off of Glenn Springs Rd. that is very impressive as it eats through several colorful and interesting strata.  Perhaps the same geologic feature.  Glenn Spring Rd. parallels it for a ways south of that intersection.

Dprather,  just clarifying. You're referencing Black Gap Wildlife Management Area (BGWMA), and not the Black Gap that has the ledge on the road near Glenn Spring?

It looks like it is outside of BGWMA.  Possibly part of Stovall ranch.  It looks to have a jeep trail down it and Reagan canyon just to the north has a more established dirt road.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

Here's a map link, for those without a cool plastic relief map:

Would love to do some exploring out there.  Reagan Canyon looks like it would be a good one.

Yes - I was referring the BGWMA.

The relief map is neat, for map junkies.

By the way, is there anything cool to see/backpack in BGWMA?
