Camping near San Antonio

I am planning a road trip that takes me through Texas. We are planning on staying at Big Bend for two nights before heading to San Antonio to see the Alamo. My question is, does anyone know of any places to camp near San Antonio?

I  live here, so I've never camped here, LOL. There are RV campgrounds that may offer tent camping as well, but I don't know their names off hand, you would just have to do a search on it. You may also want to check the Texas State Parks website. Guadalupe River SP is close with overnight facilities.

If you're traveling towards the East and will be exiting SA to the East on I-10, why not stop in Palmetto State Park.  It's easily accessible from I-10, not far from the highway, and the camping is great with some really nice/easy trails.

As far as the Alamo, don't hold the anti-climactic end to the tour against us. :eusa_doh:

If travelling along 90, you could stop at Garner state park http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/garner/, it is the most visited state park in Texas. The Rio Frio is crystal clear and it has some nice hiking including a trail to Old Baldy. It is 2 hours away from San Antonio but is right off 90.

Guadalupe river state park is the closest camping spot I know around San Antonio, but not sure if it is worth driving there to drive back down to San Antonio. It all depends if you need someplace to crash or want to spend a few hours in a nice place and where you are heading to after San Antonio.

As I write this from Lady Bird Municipal Park in Fredericksburg, Tx, I can recommend it for tent camping.  It is not a wilderness environment, but lots of folks camp here in tents. It is an hour out of San Antonio.  Another location is the Schriener Park in Kerrville.  They also have good facilities and are about an hour out of San Antonio.

Hey thanks guys. I've looked up a couple of these places and it looks like I have some a few good places to choose from. Can't wait to get out on the road and get to Big Bend and the other parks that we plan on seeing.
