Excellent article on Lower Pecos
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:03:18 PM »
I came across this excellent article on the Lower Pecos River from Outside Magazine:

http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/water-activities/paddling/canoeing/The-Lost-River-of-Divine-Reincarnation.html

Great read on a great section of river.

It didn't dawn on me until now--the author of that Outside article is S.C. Gwynne, author of Empire of the Summer Moon.  No wonder it was so well written.

Great pics, Possum.  I am going to take a side trip there next time I'm out West.

@ QS: I'll be dropping the Pecos River Queen in the waters of the Pecos next Friday morning before the sun comes up! I plan to watch Hannah rise in the east from the waters of the Rio Grande. Can't wait. The anticipation is so thick you can cut it with a knife! I've had topos of the last 12 miles of the Pecos and the Rio taped to the side of a file cabinet in my office for the last couple of months. I find myself more and more staring at them and thinking.... It's agony, but sweet agony. :1rij:

Did you see these additional pictures from the article?

QS, how rare this photo is! Three sets of left and right prints! Probably the same person for all three. This person really needed to let the earth know he was there. Normally most prints are right handed with the occasional left hand. Where is this? PM me if need be.

Nice!
I have camped on the grassy bank to the right of that cliff…ohhh...about 28 years ago. Looks a little overgrown from what I remember.  :icon_rolleyes:

A couple of friends of mine put in at Pandale about the same time we put in at the High Bridge and made our way to Dead Man’s Canyon on that trip. They met us 4 or 5 days later and said it was beautiful, but were glad to be back into “civilization.”

I have yet to do that float, maybe one of these days…

Thanks for bringing back the memory!
