I just did the Devils last weekend (report to come later) and ran into a group, including the park superintendent, doing a PR trip on the river (there was also an Express-News reporter doing a story, which will run on April 1).  At any rate, the superintendent said a permit system is being considered for the Devils River.  The idea is to limit the number of people who can float the river on a given day.  The trade-off would be that several land-owners might allow camping on their property so that parties could camp in isolated locations and have more of a wilderness experience.

Personally, I hate the idea of having to arrange a permit in advance, but I recognize that this river is getting more crowded by the year and could probably use a little regulation to preserve its beauty.

This is the primary topic that will be discussed at this meeting.  If you have any input on the proposed permit system, be sure to attend these meetings and voice your concerns.
