Enchanted Rock - Fire?
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:37:37 PM »
I spent last night in the backcountry at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area...trip report to follow, although it won't be much.

In the area to the North and West of Moss Lake, there has been a major burn. It looks like it happened a while ago...but probably not more than a year or two. Anyone know the story?

I do not remember the story, but I was out there today and it was still posted at the entrance to the ranger station.

My Big Bend camping bud Erle left today, after staying a couple of nights with us here in the hill country, headed to Bastrop State Park. He called us this afternoon from Buescher State Park apparently due to the fire that has and is destroying more than a couple of sections of land between Bastrop and Smithville near the park. The fire is reported as almost contained.

The current drought is reported as exceeding that of the mid-50's and is now even beyond the 1917 drought according to the local newspaper . . .  We very much need rain here in Central Texas.  Thank goodness my well in the Glen Rose formation which is still holding up, so far . . .

Those who rely on the Trinity Aquifer, just above the Glen Rose, are more and more sucking dry.  Lake Travis is way down and the spring release of water for down stream farmers is just now beginning.  We really need rain, bad.

ofm: There were so many people going in to the park Saturday when I got there that I hussled through the check in process just to get on the trail and away from the crowds. I didn't notice anything about the fire but I was only in the station about 4 minutes.

Al: Yep...it's amazing how we just cannot seem to get any rain to fall in central TX! I've lived here most of my 53 years of life and it's never been this bad. Doesn't look like any end in sight either.
 Praying for rain,

My friends who farm near Blanco said they went out to Big Bend last month just so they could see some greenery!
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day

Yet there's a charcoal fire ban in the Basin. I wish it would rain...seems like it might here in SA later this week.  :crossedfingers:

Shane posted this reagarding the fire ban staus.....

Fireban-from what they are saying, the entire state is a tinder box ready to go up in a conflagration firestorm like Dresden and Tokyo.

I can say this: Amistad Lake N.P. is up to the brim with water,i have never seen it so up to the top with water,of course nothing like the 1975 opening of all the water gates. What a sight that was, coincidentally it was the firt time i was there, who would have known it was ready to "burst".
Stay thirsty, my friends.
