I'll be backpacking at ER this Saturday as a "tune up" before my BB trip at the end of this month. I've been to ER lots of times and camped many nights in the "front country" camp sites. This time I'll be backpacking to one of the back country camping areas, a new experience for me at ER.

Sooooo...if anyone has any input on Walnut Springs, Moss Lake or Buzzard's Roost back country camping areas, I'd love to hear what you think is a good place to camp.
   Thanks!

Bill,

I've been to all three areas and I prefer the Moss Lake sites.  There is a large flat area under an oak tree canopy near the lake or you can choose numerous smaller areas to the north of the lake that are on higher ground.  This area is closest to ER for day hikes and cave exploration etc.  Buzzards roost is the most isolated area and there are not many good places for tents.  Walnut springs is OK but if I had a choice, Moss Lake would win out.  Have fun!

Thanks jssmith57!
I was leaning toward the Moss Lake area as my first choice but I thought I'd ask here to be sure. I thought ML would be good because it's a straight shot in via the Echo Canyon trail and it's not too long a hike, which might be good because this will be first use of a new pack.

I plan to hike in, find a decent spot and set up camp by mid afternoon Saturday. The rest of the day will be getting used to some new equipment and poking around taking pictures and reading a good book. On Sunday I'll hike out using the trail that loops around to the east side of ER down to Sandy Creek and back to the car. That gives me some more miles to be sure the pack will be okay in BB.

I'll post a mini trip report next Monday.
  Thanks!
