Nice shots, indeed!  Are those aspen trees?  I didn't know there were any in west TX.

There used to be a couple of Aspen Trees below Emory Peak; anyone know if they are still there? Beautiful summit, great hike!

Yep, the aspens are still below Emory, visible from the Laguna meadows trail past the jct. with Blue Creek trail.

I was told the TNC Aspens were the southernmost grove of Aspens in the US. I guess they were wrong. I would really like to see the Emory Aspens if Randell or anyone else has any pictures. Here are a few more TNC Davis Mountain Preserve Aspen pictures:

I attended an evening program in the basin (SRO) during a spring break trip in '71 and a Park Ranger told us that there were 220 Aspens in the Chisos, after which he said "Yes, we do count them." Now, years later I always forget to ask what the current count is until after I'm many miles away and headed home. :icon_rolleyes:

220...WOW. Are they all spread out or in one location?

Technically, there's probably only one aspen in Big Bend.  Aspens are one of the largest organisms on Earth.  Entire mountain sides can be covered by one ridiculously large individual.  Aspens are connected by their root system and come from one seedling.  So all 220 trees in the park are probably one individual.

I have always wanted to summit Livermore, but it was never available until recently; ,is it by permit? what are trail rules?
Thanks

They are open only a few days a year. Here is a list of TNC's Davis Mountain Preserve 2010's open days.  No permit needed to summit. We received special permission to drive up to bridge gap (7311 feet). Most will have to hike from the pipe gate. Only 4wd high clearance vehicles are allowed past the pipe gate and then only with permission. The hike from the pipe gate to the summit is not quite 5 miles long (one way) and gains somewhere around 2,000 feet. From bridge gap it is 2.2 miles and 1,067 feet. Here is more information on the Livermore Summit...and even more info here.

I've been emailing Chris Pipes with TNC. He offices out of Alpine I think. So far he's been really responsive.

And looking forward to being on  the summit of Mt. Livermore June 18th.

I have been reading about the extreme temps; what should I expect in the Davis Mountains and up Mt. Livermore in a couple of weeks?

If you are above 6500', I'd say upper 80's- mid 90's daytime, mid 60's at night
