Photographed between Alpine and Fort Davis. Watched me warily for a few minutes before taking flight.

I was in the area for a few days while the Nature Conservancy property was open for public access. Happens only a few times a year. If you have the opportunity to visit while they are open I highly recommend it. A high clearance vehicle is required to drive closer to the higher elevations.

We did the Madera Canyon trail a couple of years ago but it was a mid day hike, nice walk but we didn't see many animals or birds - might be time to give it another look.
