And that us true, Mozy does, Carbonite does not. However, as previously stated when the drive is not available, for whatever reason, the backup is no more.

Some of this issue could be resolved if Carbonite and Mozy allowed a scheme where you affirmatively would have to delete a file before the server decides it isn't there anymore.  Alternatively, allow you to mark files as being on external drives and thus not deemed gone when the drive is disconnected.

I suspect this has more to do with subscription income than technical issues as you could theoretically back up any number of other folks drives under your subscription (and you know there would be at least a few cheapskates out there that would do exactly that...or even sublet space through their machines).

I have quite a few Big Bend photos.....deciding which ones to pick would be a chore.

Actually, in the mode of the US and MX continuing to support the perpetual idea of an international park I, too, am continuing to contemplate posting photos. (Note to Homero: don't get all excited...this is contemplation not necessarily action :rolling: :rolling:).

I think i got the message, a loooong time a go.

Homero, I wouldn't give up hope just yet. Presidio's post over here looks to me to technically be a trip report. ( :willynilly:) So much so that I'm tempted to ask the moderator to move it to the non-BiBe trip report area. ( :eusa_liar::icon_biggrin:
So, if we have a trip report now, can picture posting really be very far off?  :eusa_think:

That's some pretty fancy readin' between the lines. I'm not sure there's enough depth in that inter-lineal space to warrant expecting photos,  :rolling:

We should quit hassling presidio for photos, for what appears to be an obvious reason.

O ye of little faith! :eusa_naughty:

And just to partially stay on topic...I bought a Blu Ray drive to backup pics and docs. I should have
bought some blank BDs as well but I thought at the time that I would wait for a sale.
It might be better for me to check prices on-line because otherwise the backup may never happen. :eusa_doh:

Carbonite question:

Can I tell it to back up files with a specific extension only? In my case .CR2?

I'm in the process of reworking my backup strategy. I'm going to go with NAS (replacing a dead Drobo) with (4) 1Tb drives for local backup. I'm replacing my local (data only) (1) Tb drives with (2) Tb drives. That will be fun. I keep 2010 images on drive D:, a copy of all image Raw files on drive D in year folders and date subfolders on drive E:. Everything in Drive E: on Drive F: I use ChronoSynch to make that happen (Mac)

Drive C, D, E, and F are (were) backed up to the Drobo until it crapped out for the second time. Technically most of the images are still backed up plus the redundant hard drive thing. At 16,465 raw files, and counting, DVD's and Blue Ray don't cut it.

I'm pretty sure Carbonite is like Mozy enough to say that yes, you can pick the file extensions you want to back up.  Or you can do it by folders.

What are you using to manage this? USB or Cat6?  Are you on a 10/100/1000 set up?  I am trying to improve my network speeds right now.

C,D,E, and F are internal drives so their communication path is the SATA buss. Since I'm on a Mac I use Chronosynch to synchronize everything. My network is Cat 6 / 1000.

Aaaaccccchhhkkkk!  :icon_cry: This thead starts and the very next morning my PC wouldn't boot up. Got an error that the system could not read the HDD to boot. I removed the HDD last night and tapped it against my palm a few times (nothing to lose! :eusa_pray:) and reinstalled it. That got things going again but who knows what will happen the next time the drive powers down. My stuff is all backed up on Carbonite so that's not a big issue.

Soooo....I bought a new HDD last night and want to install it and make it the master drive. The original drive can stay as a slave if it will keep working...or it can go away. What's the best way to do this? Is there a way to make a copy of the OS before I power down...in case the original HDD won't come back up? I know enough about computers to be really dangerous and I'm in uncharted territory...as you can tell.
  Thanks!

Your best approach would be to do a clean install of the OS. This will require a lot of updates, but still is desired. After you get the OS up, bring in your backups. I would also reinstall programs rather than try to pull them from a backup.

Understood bk. PC did not come with OS disk. Any way to copy OS before the HDD dies altogether? What about something like Norton Ghost to mirror the original HDD to the new HDD, assuming the original drive works long enough to do that? Just fishing for ways to get the new HDD going as the master.
  Thanks!
