The first thing you have to decide is DSLR or compact. Once you make that decision, there are many here that could make recommendations. Let us know.

For starters, what kind of camera do you have right now? Second question is what level of camera are you looking for (entry-level, pro, somewhere in between, etc)? Third questions is what features are important to you? Lots more questions will follow, but we need some idea where you stand and where you want to be as a photographer.

Check out TJ's I need a better camera topic for some philosphical background info.

I'd make that more of a "Point & Shoot" versus DSLR decision.

Right now I have a cheap Wal-mart compact digital camera and I'd like to upgrade to something between entry level and pro. I suppose I'd like to stick to a compact digital for right now but if the price is right, I'd go for a DSLR camera. I'm starting from a position of camera ignorance here, aside from the typical point and click. I read TJ's topic and it had some helpful advice that I'll definitly do before my trip.

Coincidentally, I've been looking for a camera too. So this thread might help:

If you're looking for a DSLR though, I know even less about those than I do compacts.

Do a search on BBC with 'camera' in the thread title; you will find many informative threads.

I can't tell where you are from, not that they care... Go to Texas Photo Forum. Sign up. Ask for help. Tell 'em iCe sent you

Camera advice is hard to give. I tend toward advising higher end and that's usually bad advice for someone starting out.  That said, right now is a good time to pick up a G9 (Canon) and that's a great camera to learn with. Pricier than a point and shoot but with more features and they are features that you will use is you progress to DSLR and really get into it (like raw format, manual mode, etc).

It might be a bit difficult to find a G9 at a decent price other than eBay since they no longer are being made.  The replacement for the G9 - the G10 is going for around $420 right now.

True... I actually meant G10 (always wanted a G9 and never ponied up for it. I've already got 3 cameras... because I recently sold the 4th)

Amazon shows the G9 and G10 in stock... but check this out... The G10 is about $150 cheaper. Go figure. The G11, though not released yet is showing to only be $50.00 higher than the G10?

Prices I don't get. The fewer megapixels in the new G11 I absolutely do get... but that's another topic for another day
