Title: How to Post Pics on Big Bend Chat!
Post by: Casa Grande on February 22, 2006, 05:19:33 PM
Moderator note: Here's a brief synopsis of how to post photos, since this thread is kinda long:

If your picture is less than 400 kb, you can just attach it to your post (i.e. click on "Additional Options..."; click "Preview" first if you're entering a reply).
Note: due to the almost-full nature of the file server area used to store attachments, this method is discouraged for all but the smallest image files. Also, a large number of attachments have been lost in the last couple of host server transitions, so it is not to be considered reliable. Also, the attachment feature was not really intended for images, although it can handle them. It may be the quickest way to post a photo, but it is certainly not the best method.

If you'd prefer to have more than 4 images per post or would rather have them embedded in your post, then you'll need to use the "Insert Image" (e.g. (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif) [img][/img]) feature and paste in the URL to your image file's location on the internet. If you don't have it somewhere online, you can store it at http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/ (http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/). Just be sure to use a unique filename so you don't overwrite someone else's file. We'd appreciate it if you kept the file size down, but if you don't, your friendly neighborhood Moderator will eventually come along and resize it for you.

There are lots of free online photo hosting sites (photobucket, flickr, etc) that will allow you to retain control over your image file. There are also several free hosting sites that do not require any registration (my current favorite is imgur (http://imgur.com/)) that will keep your file around as long as it is being viewed somewhat regularly.

Once you have your file online somewhere, make sure you paste only the valid URL inside the image tags (i.e. [img][/img]). If your URL isn't to the actual file, it won't work. The last "word" after the last "/" should be a filename like "filename.jpg".
For example: [img]http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/files/beer.JPG[/img] yields (http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/files/beer.JPG)

--- end of Moderator Note ---

1. Pick your picture on your computer! Know where the location of your picture on your hard drive is and what its name is!

2. Download the free Photo Resizer from here: Photo Resizer Download (http://www.download.com/Photo-Resizer/3000-2192_4-10326178.html?tag=lst-0-6)

OR Use your own resizing program!

3. Install the downloaded program.

4. Launch (start) the resizing program.

5. To resize your image using the program mentioned here, do the following:

Wow, and I was just going to post a few words on how to do it.  David comes along and provides graphics and everything!  And, as if that wasn't enough, he points to the Photo Resizer tool which looks pretty cool as well.  It appears much more interactive than the Windows XP Image Resizer.

Title: UPDATE
Post by: Casa Grande on April 18, 2006, 09:44:44 PM
Because of the huge amount of DATA on my server, i've had to get militant about the Gallery Image Hosting.  I've deleted any file that does not adhere to the 1mb or less rule and I've deleted all images that are more than 6 months old. Sorry if this causes you problems, but i'm over my hosting limit and can't afford to increase it at this time.

thanks for your understanding!  This is not meant to discourage you from using it, just be sure your file sizes are reasonable!

OK Big Bend Gallery Users....this is getting expensive, so I've gotta scale down the hosting.   Please only post pics under 500kb.  I've cut this in half due to the amount of storage space it is taking up on my server.  I'm going to start deleting pics that are over 500kb starting next monday.  Please, if you need to move any pics that are over 500kb somewhere else, do so in the next few days......while I'm in the park for a very special trip :)
Title: Posting Photos
Post by: MarkB on July 12, 2006, 09:43:36 PM
Feel free to post any photos of the Bend over on the MSN group website link Big Bend Photos: http://groups.msn.com/bigbendphotos
Primary purpose/space for a forum is for chat, so I understand what David is saying, and support his decision. You can always post a comment and link here to your photos on the MSN group which has more than 560 photos of the Bend at last count. Thanks!

That's what I've been doing.  Helps keep the photos I've posted all together and available for future reference.

Your friendly neighborhood Moderator had nothing better to do tonight, so I downloaded a lot of the bigger files, resized them using the Image Resizer (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/index.php?topic=19.0), then uploaded them again.  Hopefully that'll help a little.

For other places to park photos, I highly recommend http://photobucket.com/ if you want to maintain pictures in albums.  For "upload, post, and forget" stuff, I usually use http://xs.to/.  Both are free and fairly painless.

Followup:  The http://xs.to/ server is not very reliable when it comes to retaining files long-term.  Don't use it for anything you want to stick around.

I have updated the Big Bend Image Hosting (http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads).  I have now included an embedded image on the upload page itself allowing you to simply copy the img url with your mouse or the text url below the image.  Hopefully this will aid you.

This will also remind you just how big your image is and how it will display in a browser window.  After you notice it's way too big, run the Image Resizer (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/index.php?topic=19.0) on it (keeping the same file name) and upload it again.  Of course, try to make your file name unique so you don't accidentally overwrite anyone else's picture.

Another gotcha to worry about:  Make sure you don't have BBCode disabled for your post, otherwise your image will not be viewable.  This setting may be modified in your profile (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/index.php?action=profile) to always allow BBCode.

Also, note that the filename in the above example was uploaded with a space (aka blank) in the file name.  In order for it to be properly displayed when others view the post, the blank was replaced with '%20'.

Recently a new "higher rez pic pops up in a new window when you click the bar" method was implemented for pics posted on BBC:  see here:

http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/your-trip-reports/trip-nov-2126th-t7074.0.html;msg67429 (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/your-trip-reports/trip-nov-2126th-t7074.0.html;msg67429)

Yet when I posted a few minutes ago in another thread, all of my pics were downsized to 600 max, and the 2 horizontal pics were squeezed into vertical proportions.  I had to lower the rez & repost those just to keep their horizontal aspect, but still don't see any ability to access the higher rez versions.

see here:  http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/el-salon/slickrock-canyon-area-t7183.0.html;msg68822;topicseen (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/el-salon/slickrock-canyon-area-t7183.0.html;msg68822;topicseen)

Just wondering what I'm doing wrong...

I'll have to let Casa Grande weigh in on the ability/inability to pop up the high-rez versions. I will say that your pics were on the large end of the scale. I ran them all through the Image Resizer (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/photography-gear-and-tips/image-resizer-t19.0.html) at 900x1200 and 1200x900. Those 3+ megabyte files are now less than 200k each (give or take a few). It took me several minutes to get your original post to load on a fairly high speed connection. Remember, just because the board's software is resizing to 600 pixels wide doesn't mean the actual file size is reduced. The board just resizes the displayed view. The full 3MB of data for each picture has to be downloaded by the viewer before the web page rescales it for viewing.

I have a question about the gallery.  I uploaded a few pictures tonight but one of them is rotated 90 degrees the wrong way.  I tried to edit it but all appears correct in my computer.  It's gotta be some easy fix but I'm too computer illiterate to figure it out.

Hmmm, interesting. When I save it to my PC it shows up rotated to the correct vertical orientation. :eusa_think:
Looks like the board's software is confused. I'd say we leave it for now until Casa Grande can check it out.

Hmmmm, from my Mom's PC it's rotated 90 degrees left.

Another way to post pics in this forum would be:

1) Resize your pics using your preferred jpg resizer to no more than 800 x 600.
2) Upload the resized pics to a site like photobucket.com.
3) Once uploaded to photobucket, copy the IMG link from there, then paste the IMG link in your post here.

I use the Canon Zoombrowser EX software that came with my Powershot G9 to resize my pics.

like this...  (pic of Dog Canyon - Guadalupe Mtns)

(pic of hiker preparing to downclimb the falls on Clear Creek - Grand Canyon)

Photobucket is a bit busy with ads, but it's relatively fast to come up. I'm not sure if doing it this way uses up space on this server, but it is an alternative.

Thank you Richard.  I think my problem lies with the photo editing software of the Mac I'm on.  I'm a PC girl but mine is broken right now, so I'm fumbling through my husband's Mac.  I have a hard time finding resizing options in any of the software so I used image shackle, and I think that is what was rotating them.  I had a couple of pictures uploaded to myspace that did the same thing; I remedied this by rotating them first in iphoto then using image shackle to resize, THEN re-rotating them in iphoto.  Too much work.  :willynilly:

I admit to being a tech dinosaur, but this seems to be awfully involved.
Here's how I do it (and its really easy):
-create an account at imgur.com
-upload your pics (can be full resolution, the website will scale for something more appropriate for the web) by simply dragging and dropping.
-when you click on a picture you uploaded, you'll see a bbc code (stands for big bend chat code-it's especially made for us!) link to the right side of it. Copy that link and paste it into your post.

And then your image is there!

As to which photo sharing site is "best", they all have their difficulties. Flickr seems to offer a lot of options and is fairly painless once you know the steps. I've used photobucket forever, but every year they seem to make it more difficult to use.

Here's the basics for Flickr. Click on the "Share photo" link. Copy and paste the entire bbcode and it should work. To make for faster loading of the embedded image on BigBendChat, chose the 640 width option.

Note that if you are trying to share someone else's photo, they have to have the privacy settings set to public (or something like that). If they don't, then you can click the "Download this photo" link and copy the link to the file. This is also useful if you don't want to share the photo album location and/or Flickr username.

Looks like Photobucket is getting desperate for income. They will no longer allow free 3rd party hosting. That means if you have embedded images hosted on photobucket they will become unviewable unless you "upgrade" your account with them. Bummer. Looks like I will have to go edit all of my old trip reports at some point...

Yeah...hot-linking doesn't allow the host company to throw ads at the viewer. Understandable, because bandwidth=money. The do need to pay the bills, but annoying nonetheless. For less $$ than they are asking for the "upgrade", one could deploy a hosted web account.

Photobucket is currently not letting me even view my own photos when logging in to their site.  :eusa_eh:
Hopefully I have them all backed up somewhere. Anyone have any recommendations/preferences for free photo hosting sites? Guess it's time I resurrect  my Flickr account...

Also, don't use Imgbb to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network.

If you are not sure whether image you want to upload is allowed then do not upload that image. All uploaded images are checked by staff and images that violate terms will be removed without warning and uploader of such images might be banned from website."
The entire point of their service is to provide image hosting for bulletin boards, hence why they are called imgbb and then provide you with the proper bb code. What they don't want you to do is embed the images for your own website into your webpage.  If I used them to host Richard's pic on the front page, for example, that would be a violation. If it is for your trip report on a thread you've created, not a violation.  I don't really care what you use, I just thought I'd provide another option for you.

That may violate the terms of service?

Did you ever wonder what the upside to BBC is? Cause I'm still waiting on that one. Fifteen years and counting.....
Call me naive, but sometimes there just isn't one, other than doing something for someone else.
