Good ball head and tripod for heavy long lenses. ----$$$$$$

I used a monopod with a prime Canon 400 f/2.8L for years when I was shooting the Kansas City Chiefs and have even free-handed it but over the course of a game and running up and down the sidelines, the monopod was a welcome relief and very effective.  It also is fast and can allow for more creativity than a tripod.

I also use a monopod for action. Usually with a lens as long as a 400, your going to have to bump up ISO as well to freeze action, so that's another case altogether. If it's daytime the image quality can be pretty good, but night games or cloudy days change everything. A lot of it has to do with individual expectations of image quality but If you're posting jpgs to the web, you can get away with a lot. iMO.
