My G9 Died

Yet there is hope!  Apparently the internal screws that hold the neck strap work loose, can fall out and short out the electronics. Sounds like a design flaw but Canon has not sent out a bulletin.

Fingers crossed. Waiting to hear from the shop and hope not to have to replace.

PS The new cameras don't meet my new camera price point criterion of at least nearly twice as much camera for the same price.  The rate of advancement of digital cameras appears to have slowed.

QS, thanks.  That's straight out of the camera.

WARNING to fellow G9 owners.  You might want to quit using the neck strap to prevent what happen to mine.  Apparently it is a very common problem

Al - thanks for the heads up notice.  I checked my G9, and at least the external screws on the left side (when holding the camera with the screen facing you) neckstrap bracket are quite tight.  I really don't use the neckstrap other than to secure the camera around my neck when shooting in dangerous areas, but everything seems ok with mine.

John (The Field Lab guy) G9 apparently succumbed to the dusty environment of BIBE.  I think he's had to repair/replace his already.

Mine has made a number of trips, but stays in the Lowepro case about 99% of the time, so maybe I don't fit the typical user profile.

I mainly use a Panasonic Lumix FH20 on my hiking trips.  It's about half the size and weight of the G9, and the picture quality is as good or better in my opinion.  Shoots video in HD, if video is important to you.  Can be found online for around $130.

I rarely wear it around my neck but did pick it up and carry it by the strap.  There is no external indication of a problem until it dies.

$120 later the G9 is back in business.  It was the backed out strap holder internal screws shorting out a board, as predicted.  They are now secured with Loctite.

Sometimes it's the little things that are special in the desert:
