New Style Camera Strap
« on: April 14, 2009, 11:09:07 AM »
I've got a Canon 40D SLR and it gets heavy carrying it with the camera strap slung around my neck. It also bounces around as I'm walking. I found a novel solution to this and am going to try it out on my next trip to Bibe.

I found the idea at: http://digg.com/d1LIEt

It's called the Y-strap and you can see how it works from the video.

Since I'm so tight, instead of spending 25 bux plus shipping, I went down to Acadamy and bought a web strap (2- four foot straps with buckels) for $1.98. Went to the local hardware store and bought 3 key rings for $ 1.45.

The four foot strap was too short so I cut the buckle off of one of the straps and had the local shoe shop sew the two straps together. That was $5.00. So, I've got $8.43 in it.

I found an old strap pad from some luggage and used that also.

Here's what my version looks like.

I'll follow up and let you know how it worked when I get back.

Nice job ET!
I'm trying to picture in my mind how or if this could work with a day pack. I guess you would put this strap on first and then the day pack.

Anyway, let us know how it works out!

Good point, Bill.   I put the camera strap on first, then my pack.  No interference.  And the back pack comes off easily.  Had to try it before I got out there and had problems.
Thanks, Bill

What a great idea!  I have several slings for rock climbing hardware that would make a start at the Y strap.  The key rings would attach the camera.  Woww!!  I love my camera but it is too often in my pack.  Thanks for the idea.

How does this compare to the BlackRapid camera strap?

Same idea.  The BR connects to camera via tripod mount threads.  Mine is connected to the camera strap connection via a small split ring.

I believe the operation is the same.  Big difference: $48.00 plus shipping vs $8.43.

My camera hangs so that it is easy to grab with my right hand to bring up to shoot.  I've walked around with it and my day pack on - very comfortable.  - A lot better than hanging on your neck.  We'll see one week from tomorrow!
