Sigma 10-20mm Is In The House
« on: January 07, 2009, 10:15:35 PM »
As I posted earlier, I ordered a Sigma 10-20mm lens to give me wider capability on my DSLR than I had with my older film lenses. The lens arrived today and it seems to be very nice.

One thing that is going to drive me crazy: To go from wide to "telephoto" on the 10-20mm you turn the zoom ring clockwise. To go from wide to telephoto on my other Sigma lens (18-125mm) you turn the zoom ring counter-clockwise. Same maker but opposite directions to deal with. Doesn't make sense to me. Shooting in a hurry I'm sure I'll miss some shots when I change from one lens to the other.

On the plus side, the 10-20mm should make a fine portrait lens!!  :icon_eek:

That's almost scary!  Nice shot.

PS Bill, how did you light that picture?

Hi Al!
Yeah...pretty scary!! My pic looks like the eek avatar!  :eusa_doh:

Nothing special on the lighting. Our kitchen has a "cloud" type diffuser on a large fluorescent fixture. I knew it would give pretty even light so I just stood under the light, looked up slightly, put the lens about 5" from my nose, activated the shutter and what you see is what I got!  :icon_lol:

I have the Sigma 10-20 for my Canon 40D SLR and really like it for landscape shots.  I just receive my 77mm circular polarizer filter for it.  Just in time for my upcoming trip to Bibe.  Hope to get some good sunrise/sunset shots with it.  Watch for trip report around May 2.

I liked the 10-20mm even though I didn't use it a whole lot on my trip last month. The Split Rock clouds at sunset pic that I posted was taken with the 10-20mm at or close to the 10mm side.

Not a great BB picture but maybe an interesting example of the perspective use of the wide end of that lens. This is a pic of my PT Cruiser at one of the pull out on the road going into the Basin. I was only a couple of feet away from the car as I recall. You can be close when the lens is that wide!

That is one nice picture Randell!!  :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

I have a pic somewhere (on a Kodachrome slide!) of the night I spent up there 25 years ago that also shows the shadow of the peak as the sun was setting. It's something I will always remember.

You should find the slide, make a print, and hang it on the wall!

7 days and counting!
