Mirrors On The Moon

Quote
A key observing site is the McDonald Observatory in Texas where a 0.7 meter telescope regularly pings reflectors in the Sea of Tranquility (Apollo 11), at Fra Mauro (Apollo 14) and Hadley Rille (Apollo 15), and, sometimes, in the Sea of Serenity.

That experiment has outlived all others up there...no batteries or moving parts!

I thought it was kinda neat that we left seimometers up there and got reading when things would hit the moon...as I recall. Guess the power supplies are long dead. Maybe we'll send some new d cell batts when we return to the moon!   :icon_wink:

In fact, when Neil and Buzz tossed out their backpacks from the LEM, after they had finished the moon walk, the seismometers picked them up hitting the surface.

Reminds me, what does the moon smell like?

One book I read described it as the smell of wet ashes.  There also had been fears that when exposed to O2, the moon dust would ignite.
