Big Bend Conservancy
Rather than peddle a collection of Big Bend-related stories to a traditional publisher, Blair Pittman, a photographer and writer whose images have appeared in National Geographic and Forbes, opted to self-publish "Tales from the Terlingua Porch" (Sun Country Publications, $9.95; available from the author at P.O. Box 1482, Wimberley, 78676, (512) 847-5162). With woodcuts by Mark Kneeskern, the 52-page softcover looks as good as anything a trade publisher might put out. And it's full of good stories, like the one about the time Willie Nelson did a free performance in Terlingua to raise money for a badly needed defibrillator and, after the show, serenaded a new mother who hadn't been able to attend.
Texas authors are doing it for themselvesSelf-publishing isn't just for no-talent hacks, as these histories show
