Hadn't really ever thought about this, but it sounds good to me...

SANDERSON – “If you wake up on the shoulder, stay on the shoulder.”

Those words of advice came from Terrell County Sheriff Clint McDonald, speaking of a rash of accidents caused by overcorrection after a car leaves the road.

“A majority of the wrecks I have worked in 25 years in law enforcement have been single-vehicle rollovers,” McDonald said.

Typically, either because he fell asleep or because of
inattention, the driver finds himself on the shoulder.

“The natural reflex is to jerk the wheel to quickly get back on the road,” he said. “But that’s the wrong action.

“As long as you are on the shoulder, you are fine,” he said. “You should slow down and gather your bearings before getting back on the avement.”

He said the only time a driver should get back quickly is if there is a vehicle on the shoulder or a bridge is coming up. Still, jerking the wheel is a recipe for disaster.

“Only if it’s a life or death situation do you need to get back on the road right away,” he said.

Normally, there is plenty of time to show down and then gently steer the car back onto the pavement, he said.
