***MISSING HIKERS FOUND!***
We are happy to report that a Search & Rescue by NPS ground searchers found hikers Matt and Stephanie uninjured on the Dodson Trail. A total of 25 personnel, including a Border Patrol helocopter, NPS fixed-wing plane, and 10 NPS ground searchers were used. Thank you to all who helped and gave us support today.

...

They were more than a day overdue on their backpacking trip, so we are very glad to have found them safe!

...

based on the evidence at hand, the hikers could have been on the Blue Creek trails, Dodson trail, or Smokey Creek trails, each covering many miles of rugged terrain. We have to assume the potential for them to have gone off trail, adding numerous square miles to the search. We deployed these resources to ensure the best probability that these hikers would not have to spend another unplanned night, potentially injured or without food or water. Today's desert temperatures were mid-90s. Thank you for your concern.

Very good news. I hope subsequent reports will give some insight into where/how they got lost.

Unless they missed the trail branch at Smokey Creek/Dodson, I can't imagine how anyone could get lost on that section of trail.

Unless they missed the trail branch at Smokey Creek/Dodson, I can't imagine how anyone could get lost on that section of trail.

With the amount of rainfall this year, the trails are pretty overgrown. Combine that with a lack of an adequate map and/or map reading skills. Confusion at wash crossings? No GPS?

When they got off the yellow brick road, they just didn't know how to get back on. A simple GPS loaded with a few key waypoints would have eliminated the whole ordeal. -

A case of the 6 P's :willynilly:

I wonder if they get a bill for the SAR resources?

Is there any way for Big Bend Chat to reach out to them for an on-line interview?
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.
