Victor Valdez

Just saw this on Marfa Public Radio Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/Marfa-Public-Radio-KRTS-42822870949/

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Victor Valdez, a lifelong resident of Boquillas, Mexico and an emblematic local figure.
According to close friends, Valdez passed away today at the age of 65 while on the way to see a doctor in Múzquiz, Mexico after experiencing chest pains earlier in the day.
Valdez was born and raised in the small community just south of the Rio Grande from Big Bend National Park, and became famous for his beautiful singing voice and his charming rendition of "Cielito Lindo" that welcomed visitors to Boquillas as they crossed the river by rowboat.
He was one of a small number of lifelong Boquillas residents to see the once-informal border crossing connecting the village with the U.S. reopened as a formal port of entry in 2013, after it was closed off in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and ensuing border security crackdowns.
Boquillas resident Lilia Falcon called him "an excellent man" and "a man of god," saying he will be truly missed.
It's expected that a public funeral service will take place in Boquillas Thursday afternoon, but that's not yet confirmed, and it might not happen until Friday. We'll post information on services when we receive it.
Valdez was featured in our NPR story on the reopening of the Boquillas crossing in April 2013. You can find that story here: goo.gl/rwOZj

So sad to hear the end of an era.  I first topped the ridge on the trail into Boquillas in December of 2011 to be greeted by Victor's songs floating through the canyon.  I dropped a nice gift in the cup, a nearby by watchman gave Victor a  nod and we got the full repertoire.

It's a memory the family loves to recall.

We next were serenaded across the river after the crossing opened and were thrilled to meet Victor on the other side, pay our transportation fee and make our way into Boquillas.

I moved to the western coast of Africa in March and think often of my Big Bend memories.  Sad to know I'll not get to hear Victor again.

I will regret never getting to talk to him face to face instead of across the river. He will be missed by all.

Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.
