Suggestions for last week in Feb 2010
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:10:09 PM »
Hello All,

First timer here. Staying about 5 miles west of Study Butte. Arrive late Sunday via Ford Expedition from Houston, Return Early Friday. My Wife (31), I (33), her Mom (50s), her Dad (62), and our two kids (2 and 4). I'm just recoverying from back surgery so nothing to vigorous. Her folks are in tremendous shape (runners). Wife is always doing triathalons. We defintely want to make it to McDonnell Observatory. Other than that, we are wide open and looking for all sorts of suggestions that will get the little ones involved.

Can't wait to visit this part of the state!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone may have.

Be sure to visit Big Bend National Park.  You could spend a day driving the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.  Lots of pull-offs to view the mountains and desert.  If you can't spend any more time in the park be sure to do this.

Short hikes along the Ross Maxwell Drive include:

Santa Elena Canyon trail.

Sam Nail Ranch

Tuff Canyon

These are easy hikes.

If it doesn't stick you, sting you, or bite you, then it must be a rock.

Consider staying in Ft. Davis for the observatory thrill.  It is over two hours of driving from Study Butte to the observatory.  Some of the best of a visit to the observatory happens in the late evening and night.  That would be a very tiring day.  Plus the Davis Mtns. are worth a trip on their own.

If your main goal is the observatory be sure and do the rest of the Davis Mts scenic loop.
